Ever feel guilty about having a conflict of interest? I have a terrible dilemma. I am acutely aware I have to go out & earn a living to keep on top of the ever increasing cost of owning & operating a small business! My wife keeps telling me this, all the time.
I am fortunately a Lord Howe Island charter boat operator, fisherman, & fish cook. I constantly watch the weather trying to optimise my business activities whenever the weather is suitable.
I am also a kite surfer & kite surfing has really got me by the balls. Spending any spare time either kite surfing or reading seabreeze forums, classifieds or watching video clips.
Lord Howe is a spec in the ocean & subject to weather from all directions. My big dilemma is, do I wish for that steady 20 to 30knts winds from the most suitable kiting direction or do I wish for winds less than 20kts & not too much swell so I can work.
I think you will agree this is a terrible position to be in. My wife is always there to keep my mind on the job!
Does this mean you are going to diversify into kitesurf holidays? When should we come for a kiting holiday? Can we stay at your house?
ooooo so nice, kiting and sailboarding holidays with some SUP thrown in call it:-
Lord Howe could you go anywhere else holidays
I know a lot of kiters who like to fish when its not strong enough to kite.
As they said in the movie "IF YOU BUILD IT - THEY WILL COME......."
Just had an awesome 3 hour session with 5 other kiters & a couple of wind surfers in a nice 22 to 30kt SSW cross shore wind and good swell.
We all had an absolute ball, we happily introduced a visitor from Lenox Head to the local scene. He ranked it as one of his best sessions & he claimed he's traveled a fair bit.
Looks like another 2 days to follow and plenty to learn. Not a bad life. Living the dream as Laurie once commented.
Hi Dave, Dean , Smitty, Jackson, Christo
Thanks guys for introducing me to the Lord Howe Kitesurfing scene - definitely one of the most fun places I've kited, with great flat water lagoon, and some decent reef break out the back. Had the best three days straight of 20-30knots cross onshore, and could've kited more if I wasn't so exhausted!! Wish I'd brought my directional board, as there was about 2m surfbreak when the wind got up . 8 and 10m kites were perfect - I'm about 90kg, and had a twintip for the week. Definitely is as good as it looks! Hope to be back next year. Dougal
Hey 62Davo,
Hate your predicament
.. I live in Palm Beach QLD and work from home. Every time there is wind, now just about daily, my mates come and set up under my window and kite in front... arrgghhh, so I'm with you on that.
btw, what camera do you have on your kite.. the video looks really nice and mostly stable. I managed to fix the linemount for my GoPro but the kitecam is not still enough for what I like. Info on the kite rig and camera specs would be appreciated.

Whoa! That is some beautiful spots right there. Nice vid Davo.
Great to see some joy TT footage in the mocean too.
Enjoy your dilema ![]()
Hey Sir V,
Most of the footage was shot with a go pro mounted on the centre strut with duct tape would you believe. Matthew Loft did a great job putting the video together.
Unfortunately had to work this week pulling yellowfin tuna to 40kg. Nice run of working weather but looks as it may come to an end over the weekend.
Thanks for all the great comments. Looking forward to seeing more kiters visiting Lord Howe, be sure to look us up!
you gave a go-pro video of your days kiting to laww media to be produced?
mates rates or what?
