Hey there guys, been getting into unhooking past few months and ive already broken an ozone leash and now ive just broken the mystic leash supposedly made for unhooking and handlepasses..
The bungy part isnt braking its the clips that hook onto the chicken loop or wherever you choose to connect to. They just stretch open then the latch obviously doesnt close back up.
Anyone have a good solution to this.. Keep the mystic leash perhaps and buy some new attachments for it
Maybe a double action Karabiner. twist and pull gate??
What do you guys recommend and or use??
The north one is ok - IF you push the rubber sleeve up against the opener for the scissor clip. This just helps the clip not undo itself however eventually you will wear the rubber sleeve and the scissor clip too
The best handle pass leash I ever had was one from Naish
It had a d-shackle with 1 sprung loaded side ( to clip it on ) at the kite end instead of a crappy scissor clip and it has Never failed... However like all leashed after about 2 years and a thousand handlepass crashes - eventually the rubber / elastic will go leaving you with an awseom leash without any stretch to aid absorbing shock.
They were around $90 but I am pretty sure they are around $40 now, I don't know if that means the build quality has changed
I personally switched to the NSI safety because of the same reason. Ive had mine for nearly 2 years now and it is still the goods. Had to change the clip a few times.
We have one left in stock if you want one. $40 but youll need to get some of your own carabiner from the hard ware shop.
Flexi foil make a good leash that comes with the hadlow pro kites they seem to be the tougthest built that i have seen and have a sock thing over the clip so when you hook it on and slide the sock over you wont be able to accidently un hook it.
I allso like the ss handle pass system as it comes with a leash that has no qr and i havent had any problems with mine in the last 12month.
If the only part you are having problems with is the clips you can spend a couple of seconds and tape it up at the start of the sesion.
My idea for my next leash is.
Windsurfing uphaul with a larkshead around a metal ring on one end (the metal ring runs on the rope at the back of the harness) the at the bar end a small loop so I can make a larkshead onto a pigtail like attachment on the chicken loop, that way no clunky metal around your hands. QR's are for noobs.
:)
A good friend of mine got the ****s with his safety leash coming undone as yet another scissor shackle came undone - and decided to swap the the safety leash around ( as the kite end was stuffed ) tie the stuffed end to his harness and have a quick release at the chickenloop end instead of one at his end.
As he was putting his wakeboarding boots back on after a crash at woodies in about knee deep water - his bow kite which was just sitting on the water decided to relaunch. As it did for some reason it started turning to one side ( was a bow with pulleys near the bar ) and the loops began. His harness got yanked nearly up to his chest and the kite started death spiraling - doing up the bar in an "end for end" position towing him at about 15 kts in 30kts of wind out to see. He could not reach the bar or quick release because his harness was yanked right up under his armpits and the kite was doing insanely powerful loops. The quick release was at the bar end and not at his harness end. while struggling to breathe his board cought the water and immediately towed him under and started to pin him down - then he angled the board up and resurfaced 10 meters later gasping for breath surfing backwards at 15 kts and he could do nothing.. we sent a fishing boat after him and luckily it was fast enough but it eventually ran over his lines about a km off shore as he was giving up hope ... contorting his body to stop his board towing him under for minutes while his chest was getting crushed by the loops making it labouring to breathe ... closest he said he has come to drowning.
moral of the story
Only dickheads, or crap riders who don't know any better will tell you not to worry about a quick release on your safety leash![]()
The slingshot leash doesnt have a QR on the leash but on the spreader bar in a spot where you allways know where it is a lot of the time with a handle pass settup the kite will pull you backwards if it loops uncontrolably. works well
This is a good reason for liking the Pat Love TFMK waist harness. It has a quick release pin on either side of the harness which disconnects the handle pass bridle.
I figure if your behind a death looping kite being towed backwards at a rate of knots, even if you have a QR on the leash itself, you have a slim chance of actually grabbing it.
Just an observation.
