Hi guys
I'm 82kgs flying a2013 13m edge
Thinking of building a board
What size would you recommend for sub 14 knots
Thanks in advance.
the lightwind boards are the go!
Flysurfer Door and Spleene Doors and Monster doors will have you cranking upwind on your 13m edge in sub 10knts and on the Large doors you can still do heaps of tricks, boosting, riding blind.. on the monster doors the tricks get a bit harder as they are huge. ![]()
Not wanting to put you off making ur own board - great project.
But if you are wanting design ideas or thinking of buying then come in & demo the Shinn King George. Its the first light wind board Ive ever used that actually kites like a regular TT rather a fridge door.
I built the best light wind TT ever. 135x48cm, zero rocker. Made out of marine ply. It was a little heavy but worked extremely well.
It was a such a good board I eventually bequeathed it to a mate (who still uses it) and I got one custom made by Cardboards. I still use it sometimes.
I have a Epic Oxyen 135x47. I can kite and go upwind with at 10 knots with a 10 meter NRG 2013 kite. I have also used my surfboards but the TT board is better for light winds. I also have a Carboard 144 x 46 but I think the Oxyen works better. I weight 85 Kilos. I think the wider is better than length. cheers
Yeh you need the board to be efficient. Even with a big kite you are not pouring much power over the wing. Developing some apparent wind through board speed is important. a lighter guy with a bigger kite can ride a a more traditional TT along the spectrum of things. Need to define what type of riding you want to do. Smaller the kite as a set weight the more efficient the board has to be all the way along the spectrum from a TT to a wide flat TT to a skim and in the end a race board. The further you move back into TT land ( which ate inefficient boards really) the bigger the kite you will need at a set wind speed and set rider skill.
Also swell and currents make this equation even more prominent.
For sub 14knots the best board would be a 17m edge.
Sorry! Couldnt help myself...
But seriously, rocker and width have so much more to do with efficient planing than length. (To a point).
As per eppos post, depends a hell of a lot on what you want to achieve from the board...
Ie, you wanna mow the lawn in super light?. You wanna pull flickys in 10-12, boost? Wave ride?
All very different.
I have a bunch of lightwind gear, and as far as twin tips go, my old underground 144 is pretty good. Have also ridden the 152 tahee, which was awesome upwind and still manoeuvrable.
Current fav, not tt, is the north nugget, kinda like a skim with fins...
Good luck on your quest.![]()
