Which countries have you kited and where was best?

For me (in order of best to worst):

Brazil - the best
Cape Verde - waves and wind and nothing else
Dahkla (western sahara) awesome flat water spot...
Mauritius beautiful
Australia (only done east coast between Melbourne and Magnetic Island, 10 weeks without much wind!)
Spain mostly Tarifa and surrounding area. Strong wind but choppy
Egypt good thermo wind
England choppy waves crap weather but good wind
Italy (Sardinia, nice spot at porto pollo)
Holland (like England, without the English)
France - bay of biscay. Tres bien
Ibiza - only good for partying
Thailand (windless)

Hey Rooster,

My trips listed below. Not in any order.
Favorites for me (flat water kiter) are, Cocos & Ras Sudr

I need some advice re Daklha please.
Where is best for flat water?
Is Ocean Vagabond bungalows good place to stay.
Is there another place south of there that is better? Name?
Tidal range looks to be about 2.5 metres. I assume the sand flats are dry at low tide. Is there a difference in tide times between Dakhla town and the kite camps?

Rob

Never been to the Lake George you are thinking of (in NSW) but Lake George near Beachport SA is a good spot. Particularly Foster Point but only been once and not very windy.

I was there in July and it was busy, but certainly not crowded. I have heard it can get really busy around September.

For a novice wave rider like myself it was an awesome spot to get out on the waves and progress. Amazing location!

Added a couple of photos 1. View from the beach 2. View from my $40US a night apartment.

I have kitesurfed a bit around Asia and would rank as follows
1) Borocay, Phillipines - good conditions on east side of island
2) Mui Ne, Vietnam - good wind and for a dollar a kid will pump up your kite while you have brekkie and then put it away while you have a cold one! However, it is getting crowded...
3) Taiwan - great wind in their winter (Nov-Apr), but filthy water on west coast, better to go to south and east of the country - place called Taitung
4) Koh Samui, Thailand - great flat water spot, but lack of consistent wind makes it frustrating

Avoid all these places in their summer (May - Sep) as you will have little wind mixed with typhoons (cyclones/hurricanes) as it is the rainy season.

PNG was pretty awesome in 2010. Didn't get a winter kite getaway in 2011 as I did the family holiday gig in NZ.

Trying to decide for 2012... PNG again (sure to be an awesome time with plenty of wind an no crowds) or Cocos.

Rob, for Dahkla try to make sure you have a 4x4 or arrange transport via the hotel or locals. There's a place about 1 hour off road called La Duna Blanca... Best flat water spot... Just amazing. It's a horse shoe shaped dune about 30ft high that at high tide is surrounded by shallow flat water. You can jump off the dune, into the water, or jump over the ends/ tip of the dune. Almost always good winds.

You can kite there from the main bay(northern part of the bay) where all the Bedouin camps are, but it's mostly downwind so you'll need to make sure you get a ride back. It's really middle of f-ing nowhere. Will try posting a pic.

Dakhla town is pretty basic, stay in the bay beach Bedouin camps or the kite hotel. I stayed in Rio Aguilar. Ocean Vagabond was probably the nicest place. They have a Sky Rider set up, good North rental etc.

Oh and expect getting a major case of the sh-ts.

Oh and freshwater for showers etc there is full of sulfur, really stinks! Especially bad at camp Attitude. Salt water baths is best

Oz - East coast: Port Douglas down as far as Wooli. West Coast: Perth to Exmouth

Vietnam - Mui Ne... ok. Choppy water, lumpy wind near beach, thin beach, busy. Great bars, food, facilities (air/kiteboys/etc). I liked the north beach more, had to take a taxi or scooter 15 mins to get there, but quieter and cleaner wind, and more/better swell. I did almost step on a syringe there tho.

South Africa.. Much like east Oz along coast (Durban/J bay, garden route, etc) but as you get nearer the cape add more wind, colder water. ie swaps from being like east coast to west coast.

Cambodia: No wind when I was there
Otres beach was nice tho, and must get some wind
www.sihanoukville-cambodia.com/about-sihanoukville/beaches/otres.html

Thailand: No wind either

Here is my list in order of preference:

Hawaii
- Mokuleia(Oahu) - perfect rights, reef break, wind everyday from 2pm to 6pm.
- Kite beach, Maui - flat water and sometimes good waves, strong winds 24x7.
- Kailua - windless.

Los Roques, Venezuela
- Super flat and hot water, great people and the downwind from island to island everyday is epic.

Brazil
- Cumbuco, Fortaleza. Super flat water, steady wind every day, but the lagoon is packed.
- Ibiraquera, SC - Epic rights during the winter.

France, Spain,Portugal, Aussie WA VIC NSW, NZ,UK, Wales, Cook Is,New Cal, Fiji,French Polynesia Moorea Tahiti, Thailand, Indo, Maui. Have had great sessions at all these places. I like Maui despite chop and the few very annoying people you might have to deal with. A visiting windsurfer that had visited every june/july for 20 years told me he knew of only few days ever with no wind - a no wind day came up - 15-18 knots and we were the only ones out on the "no wind day" lol - or should i say only ones with 12m kites.

Los Roques is on my bucket list...

Re Brazil, did the 400km coast between Fortaleza and Jeri. Combuco was good but Jeri was epic... Check it out next time!

Venezuela - Coche 500m flat water beach, off shore, with $5 rescues. Not much else to do.
Brazil - Ilha Guajiru (inlet from the sea) between Jeri and Cumbuco. Best place in northern Brazil
Tarifa - ferocious levante or 20knots seabreeze. Nice mixture and fun parties.
South Tenerife - 35knots gusting to 50. too many windsurfers spoil it a little.
Western Australia - Favourites - Hangover bay, Lucky bay, Augusta, Exmouth? (going tomorrow) Wind seems to be better north or south of Perth.
Namibia - inlet with dolphins and flamencos
Turkey, forget it.
Northern Europe, too cold why bother.
Morocco - going soon.
