Thanks to the 2 Townsville kiters(on North kites) who created havoc on the main beach at Byron...can't imagine what these guys were thinking as main beach is an absolute no go zone let alone next to the flags...they set up their kites right next to the flagged area and rock wall on the other side..the surf rescue guys approached the 2 and told them they can't set up there but they persuaded the guy they were competent kiters so he gave them the benefit of the doubt and told them to launch and head straight out towards the wreck away from the 50 odd swimmers in the flags...one of the guys makes it out and heads towards the pass, the other guy fumbles around having trouble getting to his feet then when he does get up decides to jump and throws his kite back towards the groin nearly hitting rocks then takes off towards the flags and yep guess what drops his kite on everyone in the flagged area board goes through the lot while the understandably irrate clubby try's to crab the guys kite...we try hard to keep kiting safe and do the right thing here in byron as there are alteady talks of a ban,if I witness this myself I will just deflate the kite while still on the beach ..a friend that had been kiting at the wreck couldnt believe what he saw and apologized to the beach patrol guys on behalf of byron kiters as they try to work with us but he was pretty pissed off so was writing an official report and since that incident have been on everyones case...with the nature of the sport things can go wrong for anyone but that was just blatant stupidity, the guy apologized and I'm sure he felt like a dick but the damage is done

I bet the clubbies / surf rescue (rightly) won't let it happen again...

There are rules in place here for the fagged area and the distance off.
Is there any punishment for breaking them?

Personally I reckon anyone going near the flags needs the book thrown at them, not just if they are on a kite, but any other form of craft prohibited from swimming areas when there is usually large areas of beach either side

Ha! That's probably the 2nd worst scenario 🐳

This kind of scenario happens everywhere and can be easily avoided with appropriate signage and enforcement from all local authorities.

Last time I was in Byron I noticed "Surf Rules" signage heading down to Clarks and Tallows beach. Perhaps they could duplicate this with "Kite Rules" and establish a harmonious culture like they have with surfing.

A few bad apples spoil the whole batch ~~~ I saw this happen......
clubbies need to be on our side, we gotta respect the flag zone,
What's the distance 'rule' that kiting has for SLSC flagged areas?
I heard it was 200m? Can anyone clear this one up?

I was down the beach 500m away and couldn't believe my eyes. It was surreal, this guy was trying to launch with swimmers all around him and a flag about 2m away. Seriously his board on his feet dangling and twisting under his kite with grannies and toddlers all around him - total bonehead of the twinskulled, retarded morons of f**kstick award.

Beach faces straight north, rocks 50m away, covered in sunlovers as was every bit of sand or grass. Pure toolism. This is the 1st and only incident I have seen there and could easily be avoided with more clubbie involvement.

It's gunna happen that a bit of kite law stuff will have to be taught to all clubbies. Keep it out of councils hands if possible, they will surely twist it and screw it up the wrong way. If their are any 'signs' that should be put up they should be put up by the kiters with council permission, not the other way around with the kiters looking on. That or a flag system like the board flags operated by the clubbies. Does any of this sound reasonable and workable?
From WA? How have you guys worked out with the SLSC's?

Main Byron is fun in a straight onshore as their is no gutter and the waves make gr8 sliders but the best days are the ugly ones where no-one's are around. Or super early in the morning....

That daywas one of the very few sunnie days we've had in a very rainy summer. So the main beach was packed, waves were about 6" high in the shorey, so you can see why the cowboy from up north was getting pounded! lol, I shouldn't be laughing but the situation was as hopeless as it was surreal , was I gunna kite up there in the flags and give him a serve? Though I take issue with the heading of this post as a "worst possible". There is MUCH worse than this. This was "potentially" a bad situation. I'm pretty sure clubbies can confiscate a SB from a cereal offender but what about how are they going to land a kite? and confiscate it? Cutting Lines? that could end up worse. I suppose they could take his TT ? Sounds fair. If you endanger someones life in a publicly guarded space you shouldn't be given a 2nd chance. A 48 hr cooling off period and you can have your board back? Would that be sufficient?

As michel mentioned there is council pressure already and Jason and a bunch of kiters are doing their best to promote not kiting at Main period so this can't happen, obviously this pair didn't consult the NSWKA webpage for byron, or Byron Kiters or anyone for that matter! Nice one EINSTEIN !

some common sense in sort supply....

but i better ask for next time i'm up.... is Belongil ok? last time there were a few folk around but other kiters out, so figured it was ok. Also, seems that southern corner, inshore from the pass, has a regular pretty proficient crew playing around in it.... and Tallows? i figure i just head south of the main surfer zone, or cut through the burbs and bush further south

All those spots are the go gordknot. The Pass/Clarkes where you mentioned attracts the euros & poms, spot the aussie there, it's nice to go there and buzz with them every now and then but belongil get's more wind angles, nice waves off the wreck in easterlies is cross onshore in Nthies & usually has massive flat gutters and less dudes than the pass - hard to beat, but has more dogs....

Tallows is super fun slider land on Sthlies and I've only ever seen one other guy there (packing up). Be prepared to kite with just you and elements there, it usually looks gnarly but the inside zone is sweet ass skate zone.

When rya coming up?
