I think WA steals all the wind around that time ![]()
there is a sick cable park over there if there is no wind, so i am told.
from what I've heard, your best bet is hua hin, about 2 hours drive south of bangkok. It's where the pkra hold a stop each year. Christmas is the middle of there season so you should get wind, but it doesnt get very strong, I think 15-20 knots, small shorebreak. But a really long beach so lots of space. Apparently there are some nice resorts there too. Most other spots in thailand aren't worth taking your gear too. I have not been there, this is just what I have been told.
You should also consider Bocaray in the phillipines, its regarded as one of the best kiting locations in south east asia.
Mui Ne, Boracay, and Taiwan are the best spots for Wind in Asia during the North East monsoon season (Dec-Feb). If you're looking at Thailand it's a nice place to ride when it actually blows, but it's normally light wind, and not exactly a kiting destination (There's plenty of other stuff to do when there's no wind though.)
Phuket during NE monsoon - most people ride at Friendship bay (Chalong Bay), which is tidal and the wind only blows in the morning and afternoon, so the timing to ride can be a bitch. It's good for beginners as you can touch the bottom pretty much anywhere. Phuket also has a cable park.
Koh Samui, during NE Monsoon - most people seem to ride at the SE corner of the island adjacent to the 'Samui Orchid Resort' (Just south of 'Maret' if you look it up on Google Earth), There's a flat water, shallow, sandy lagoon with a reef out the back. Great for beginners. Tidal area. FYI, flights to/from and accommodation in Samui are generally more expensive than Phuket.
thanks for the info burls, thats good to know. I will be in phuket in feb(for a wedding not a kite holiday) , Its good to know that I can't rent some gear if the wind does come up.
i was in thailand for the new years party last year. didnt intend on kiting but i saw one up in the sky on koh phangan one day. wind was generally light the 3 days i was there but i managed to rent and then buy a 12m pretty cheap.
i never ride twin tip but it was my only choice and i managed to get going it was pretty fun.
take your big kites
