kiter or surfer?
Pick an area you want to stay in and I'll give you the low down. I worked there for 12months (also kited)
If your a surfer then uluwatu side.
If your a kiter then sanur side.
I'm your a cheeseball then kuta side.
Just look out for the 'wanita nakal'.....!
Both!!
Advanced kiter, average surfer...
Was primaly going to surf but if there was wind around( April) would be keen for some of that action!!
You have plenty of options, but you are not likely to find much info on the 'cheap shacks' online.
I stayed in Dreamland (not the best surf, but it is short paddle to Balangan and not so far from Bingin, Uluwatu + more) for about 3 bucks a night. But cheap ones are everywhere. Bingin, Balanagan, Uluwatu (you pay more here). You just rock up and look around to find the place you like best.
Your best bet, especially if you are going for both kiting and surfing, is to hire a little scooter. You can get to about 10 different breaks from Dreamland/Bingin in about 15 minutes on one of those. If you get if for more than 10 days, it is only a few bucks a day. You get a rack for you board, put your kite on your back and away you go. Just bring some small change to bribe the police and wear a helmet.
If your just after general accomadation, transport information, your best bet is to post on the lonely planet thorn tree forum.
April is too early for wind....
Cheaper accommodations are around Kuta but not on the Beach..
Balian could be a good choice but not sure about prices there!
Also on the Bukit for surfing and cheap places but then you are far from everything else.
I would say Canggu for Surf and maybe Kite (if you get lucky) and closer to some evening action.
NOt sure about places there but there are few new surf camps.

I was there last year in July. Take a big kite. The flat water in the lagoon at Sanur is awesome to kite on, and if the wind picks up you can head out to the breaks beyond the reef. You can also hire gear on the beach at Sanur.
From what i saw Canggu would be the best bet for both, stayed with a mate who lives there and there are a few cheap places to stay, you are not going in peak times so just rock up at a home stay and there should be a room. Get a scooter for a few days (We hired a car for AUD10 per day) and there are plenty of breaks up and down that stretch of coast.
Had a couple of good surfs at Canggu and there was one day when the wind absolutely ripped in, but I did not have my gear and you cannot hire there, so I had to settle for watching guys rip it up in awesome swell and wind
.
The waves on shore at Kuta/Legian are awful, the ones worth surfing are offshore.
what size kite should i take for july and im 85kg got an 11m now guessing ill be needing something bigger any graphs i can check ?
Statistics in the weathers web site are not working.
The wind reading at the airport is totally off... It show 8 knots in Easterly when in reality it could be 16 knots...
JUst check the statistic in my web site... I have been windsurfing/kitesurfing in Bali since 1997...
85 kilos..... 12m and big surfboard OR 14m and TT.
If you loose few KG before coming it would be better....
11m and TT and you watch from the beach 90% of days!

Hey mate. If you are wanting to kite and also surf i wouldnt be going to bali.
head to sumbawa. i did a two month kite and surf trip last year across the winter months and fluck me, sumbawa is the pick of all the indo islands for good wind and waves.
you become soooo spoilt that 15knots cross shore in nice reef breaking waves is not good enough. well i wish i was there now.
pm me for any info.
i havent tried flores, but i prefered sumbawa to sumba, just because i preffered kiting with others. have you been to flores, how was it?
