I bought a two string Nash Kite off a guy who quickly taught me some basics, (luanching with a friend off the beach and landing with a catcher) flew it on the beach for many hours, and a small stunt kite as well for many many hours.
Upon fitting the wake board boots while looking down and hooked in to the harness, the kite dipped straight into the power zone and stayed there spiraling for about 4-5 seconds. This was enough to have me ripped up the beach about 100meteresleaving my skin a little sand blasted and my nerves a little shocked. What if that soft white sand were oyster covered rocks? May not have been so funny then. Respect to the power of the kite. Now i am keen to learn to Kite Surf properly and safely, am very excited about becoming active in the sport and with it's members.
questions:-
What gear should i start with, can i modify this two string kite to have a better safety release than the current wrist strap?
Any recommendations for instructional video's, instructors, where to buy gear or have gear modified and setup in the Hawks Nest Area?
I am a strong swimmer, have good ocean knowledge due to surfing and being around the water my whole life, i have been working on commercial lobster fishing boats for the past ten years in WA and USA. Ten years wakeboarding, water skiing/barefooting and snow too!
Cheers,
David
CRIKEY!!
If this is a genuine post burn the kite or use it for anything other than kiting. That is seriously dangerous equipment and the bloke that sold it must be an orshool.
2 line kites disappeared with the dinosaus (there is a reason we don't have any dinosaus around and it is 2 line kites).
Get a 4 or 5 line kite (pretty much any kite) from 2005 onwards and you will be having a lot more fun, a LOT safer.
Surely not?
If this post is legit - how is the form on the guy who sold the two line kite.
I almost killed myself flying a 4 line 2005 Rhino - do yourself a favour and buy a modern 4/5 line kite and keep yourself alive!
<obligatory>Also, get some professional lessons before you hurt yourself!</obligatory>
DVDs should only be used as a review after lessons or when you have the basics down. If you watch a Beginner DVD do it after your lesson and concentrate on what you have already learned and maybe only the next short section. this will help you remember what was said in the lesson and may explain it differently than the instructor giving you a better understanding of what is being taught.
Do not use DVDs without taking lessons to get you up to the up and riding stage. ![]()

32yo Male in hawks nest, NSW, Australia

With Landkiting / hanggliding, paragliding experience and surpisingly no wakeboarding, you seem, to manage to get into bother with a little 2 liner kite
after you get some lessons and get the basics....
the best spot's around Hawks Nest are up towards the little Gibber where its more side shore in the NE'sters and theres nobody up there!
its pretty onshore down near the golf club and theres usually lots of people there.
In the sourthleys the best spot, espically for learning is down on the vary tip of windy Wooper near corrie island, shollow water and desearted.
in the winter westalies down near the bolders (towards Yacabah) is the place to go
also look at Board crazy in Newcastle for lessons and gear

Name and shame the bugger who sold you the 2 line kite on this forum. Ditch the boots for learning, go for straps, much easier when learning.
Sounds like you have scored yourself some great gear!!!
Give your mate who sold it to you a pat on the back and we will see you in hospital soon!!!!
You nearly had me![]()

the guy said he knew what he was doing and wanted an old school wakestyle kit. I just sold him what he wanted and alerted him to the high level of experience needed for the gear.
not my fault he lied and didn't take the clear advice given to him.

If this is legit, burn the kite and get lessons( said for the 20th time).
For the record to all the guys calling "Troll". I was at an auction a couple of weeks ago and a 2 line 8m Wipika came up. This guy paid $180 for it (i know what you are thinking), my mate tried to buy it for $20 bucks for nostalgia. I approched the guy after the auction to ask him about his level of experience. He said he had never flown a kite before and bought it for fun and to get (quote)"dragged down the beach". After warning him of the dangers of what he just bought and gave him a card for a local instructor, i left shaking my head. So yes, it still does happen!
