just wondering if any on has any experience in looping your lines to double them up (halve their length)? i want to try some super short lines and dont want to buy a set. does it shred the lines or attachments?
sorry if its already been covered
Kite for long enough and you will try all sorts of silly stuff... ![]()
It can be done, but depends on how your lines attach at the bar end, as most bars try to minimise snag points (good) but that means you might have trouble finding a decent spot to connect the other end of the lines to.
Back in the bad old days some line sets came with sleeving that was floating on the line so that when you made the loops at the kite end you had sleeving there instead of bare flying line (which could wear). IF you are keen you should be able to slide sleeving over the existing line ends, and that's probably a good idea if you plan on doing this more than once or twice.
The trickiest part is hooking up the kite, as you need to set the kite end loops in the middle of the (now halved lines) so that they are equal. Best bet is to get someone to hold the bar while you pull each line tight before connecting it to make sure you get it right.
Short lines are fun, but work best on mid -> smaller kites. Get a friend to help you rig, check the setup and launch.
You will normally be able to ride 1 or 2 sizes larger kite due to the smaller power window of shorter lines, but remember that kite will still be able to generate the same amount of power it would have on full length lines to kick your butt, even if it is for a faster / shorter butt kicking than usual. [}:)]
Enjoy!
You might be able to borrow some from an instructor. Most have a set of around 15m handy, any shorter doesnt work that well. Easier than stuffing around with your gear. A 6 pack for a couple of days and someone will be happy.
exscuse the ignorance but what gain can be had doing this?
simply more fun? quicker turning kite??????
hey puetz I think he was thinking of halving the lengh not doubling it (20m Rhino on 54m lines only in the nt).
Jake just put a sleeve over your lines and you won't have a problem. A shoelace will do the job and is easy to slip on.
yeah cheers fellers, i want to halve the line length just for a bit of an experiment try some loops and for really windy conditions.
good call on the sleeve i will definatley do that.
Hi Jake,
Galah's reply was pretty much spot on. Just make sure that the doubled lines don't interfere with your safety flag out system in any way. You don't want to disable your flag out.
Looping with super short lines is gnarly [}:)] I used to use 20m (back in the day) that was heaps of fun and it used to loop so hard all four lines would go slack after the initial full from the loop. Careening through the sky towards your kite with slack lines is crazy. Usually ended in tears! ![]()
Have fun.

Doubling lines, as in double the length, works up to a point then the gain from the increased power stroke is lost by the quadruple increased drag induced by the lengthening of the lines.
It works something like this, double the diameter of an object moving through a fluid and the drag quadruples.
Doubling the length is the same as doubling the diameter.
45-50M seems to be about the practical limit for most kites. recently in Port Douglas I used a 2011 15M Ozone Edge on 50M lines and it definitely improved my ability to stay and go upwind in low wind, prior to doubling the lines I could only go downwind.
Did the same thing with a 2011 C4 12M at Flag Beach in Fuerteventura this winter and it aslo worked well and enabled us to at least get a ride in that day.
