if may have changed but i went to indo last year . I paid for an extra 10 or 12kg's online with Air Asia so that would had of given me 30-32 kg total and just stuffed everything in my big quiver bag, 3 kites and 3 surf boards all my clothes etc and when i got there they said that will be like $200 for excess. wtf. i mentioned i had paid online for excess already as i knew i would be over and they said we can see that but sporting goods dont count for excess baggage online etc etc- whats the fkn difference what it is- weight is weight. anyways long story short i got slugged another $200 excess and didnt get refund for extra paid online. they are all the same. but hey i only paid like $350 or something for flights so even with excess its still cheap.
trust me he's paying for it. he doesnt get laid, needs to have 3 maccas meals for lunch instead of one and so on
air asia were good for weight flying to philippines last year, i just got the 20kg luggage deal, put my wakeboards and clothes all in my big travel bag, weighed in no dramas, flew to KL then to manila, then on domestic i paid for sports seperate n they actually made me seperate the shiit into plastic bags for weighing then let me put it all back together anyway, had no problems on way back got through everything fine.
Hahahaha this is an interesting topic, I am a little biased because of my size, being 6"4 and weighing a little over 100kg does that mean I should be made to take less baggage? It also almost every time guarantees that my knees are being jammed somewhere around my ears when I try to sit down on a flight :) I think airlines see us coming and the dollar signs just roll... But in sayin that a group of us flew the cocos last year and we got pretty lucky and didn't have to pay any excess... And we had a fair amount of kite gear, I know I was bout 5 or 6 kg over...
I found out exactly what jetstar allow.
I went to indo in May this year.
Essentially jetstar use baggage containers on their short haul flights,
ie, brisbane to cairns (3hrs), which are generally smaller planes. These
allow a maximum of 190cm. If your board is slightly over, say good bye
to the nose or tail.
Long Haul flights, ie normally 5,6hrs + - (Sydney - Denpensar), use larger planes, like A330 (maximum board length of 2.77 metres).
Jetstars' online booking process does not indicate what type of plane you'll be flying, so you CAN'T work out if you can take your board or not.
However there is a flight schedule indicator, which tells you what type of plane is used on which destinations.
I had originally booked to goto bali from Brisbane via cairns. But i managed to change my flight via sydney JUST SO I COULD TAKE MY BOARDS.
At check in, there were many other guys getting turned away from the counter !!!
I don't know what ****ing idiot decided it'd be a good marketing approach to reduce the board length allowance to BALI, but he/she obviously doesn't surf or kite !
My advice, if your taking a surf/kite board, avoid Jetstar at all costs.
I'm going to be flying virgin from now on.
I flew Air Asia and paid $17 for upsize to 30kg check in luggage but as Ryland said that doesn't cover sporting goods, you have to pay an extra $20 sporting goods fee which allows you 15kg.
Luckily I found this out before I left home so instead of packing extra stuff in the board bag there was just 3 boards (2 surfboards 7'3", 6'8" (yeah I'm heavy and lazy) & 1 6'4" converse kiteboard), no fins, leggies anything, it still went over the 15kg mark but they didn't even weigh it so there was no extra fee, (there policy is $8/kg for excess).
The rest of my check in luggage which included two kites, two bar & lines harness, clothes etc weighed in at 16kg and I was allowed 30kg so no drama there either.
The end result meant that it cost $37 on top of the ticket each way $20 for sporting goods and $17 for the upsize to 30kg (which I didn't really need).
Im still here though so may do a bit more shopping, and due to 'problems' with my kite board I bought another board whilst here so will see how I go with 4 boards going home.

Just got back from Bali flying jetstar. Took a kite, surfboard and kiteboard, all came to just under 20 kilo and didn't get slugged any extra costs. Maybe they were having a bad day.
Been Jetstar to Bali more than 10 times..
It's a 50/50 really.
I have a cab golf bag, 1 kite and 1 board. 140cm bag with all my junk in it. As I have traveled a lot with this bag I know that when I have my 10m kite, board, harness, bar and a few clothes and shoes in it is consistently 18-19kgs. Usually at the Bali end it's no dramas. It's always the Aussie end where the fun begins and the sketchy feeling start to your holiday begins. Just hoping your bags will get there!!! Tip*** Be super nice, smile and make conversation with the check in staff.... Hi? How's you day going? busy flight? ect ect. BE NICE. It works especially with Jetstar (unless you get 'Rhys' the jetstar queer check in dude in Perth)
Usually it's all good but I remember this one time a smartarse shirtlifter (see above for name) check in staff with his fairy attitude tell me that I cant have clothes and sporting gear together. I had too remove all my clothes and take them on as hand luggage. So from now when they ask me what's in the bag I just say sporting gear.
Another time on Royal Brunei I had major problems also. *** DON'T EVER FLY ROYAL BRUNEI!!! Cheaper isn't always the best option.
If you want guaranteed no dramas and service don't be a tight arse. Go Qantas and apply for a frequent flyer card. Everytime I use Qantas now with my FF card/member number it's a speedy and stress free proceedure.
I just flew to PNG and back with Qantas. I'm a gold frequent flyer and Qantas Club member so i get a lot of leeway with excess. I flew with 30kgs there and 32kgs back in a dakine bag that splits in half. I didn't pay any excess at all with Qantas.
Little tip. They never call you on the size of our carry on at check in. You may get nabbed at the gate but by that time all they can do is put it in with the other bags and they can't charge you for it. I carried everything but my kite gear for a 10 day trip in a 35L backpack that probably weighed 14kgs. Only got asked once for a connection on a small plane and they just chucked it into the baggage hold at no cost.
Why is that you bitch and moan about Jet Star crap all the time, but you still book your next flight with them.
They always offer these super fares because they know they are going to nail you with extras and you end up paying more anyway.
There's only one way they get the message, fly with someone else! Money talks [}:)]

Sports Equipment
If you are travelling with Sports Equipment on a Virgin Blue domestic flight, you will be eligible to check-in an extra 5kg of baggage allowance free of charge. This additional allowance is allocated above your purchased checked baggage allowance for Blue Saver or GO! Fares or above the inclusive checked baggage allowance for Velocity Gold and Silver Members or for Guests travelling on Flexible, Corporate Plus or Premium Economy fares.
Excess baggage charges will apply once the full allowance, including the additional 5kg allowance, has been exceeded.
If you are taking only sporting goods and you are travelling on a Blue Saver or GO! fare, you will still be required to purchase the checked baggage allowance of up to 23 kg. Remember you can pre-purchase this allowance for $10 per flight before you arrive at the airport otherwise you will be charged a $20 fee at the airport.
For example, if you have purchased a baggage allowance of 23kg, and are travelling with a bike, you will be eligible for a total checked baggage allowance of 28kg. If your bike weighs 10kg, you will be able to take additional checked baggage (such as a suitcase) weighing up to 18kg.

Excess baggage charges will apply once your total baggage allowance has been exceeded.
Sporting Equipment includes but is not restricted to:
* Bikes

Just took a group of 14 to Samoa with Pacific Blue, most of us had board bags in the 30kg region and had no excess baggage charges.
The baggage allowance is exactly as it reads above - must be something to do with Richard Branson being a kiter I think.
Best way to pack is to only check-in your kite gear and take your clothes in your carry-on. It is the tropics and you only really need a few tees and a couple of boardies eh!

Only got slugged 375,000rp (roughly $50) coming back with four boards in a heavy wheelie bag weighing in at around 25kg, with Air Asia so no complaints here.
Not to bad considering the tickets were cheap as economy promo tx.
All up inc taxes, sporting goods fees, luggage upsize approx $350 return.
Should really have only taken two boards but hey I did use them all.
Took two kites 9 and 12 and only used the 12, and even then struggled a lot of the time, time to go on a diet.
maybe we need to petition Richard Brason for free travel for kitesurf gear ......hes is such a big fan of kite surfin it might just work
