Looks like he lining up a 1 hit wonder into a close out from 2 miles in front, hardly a U turn.

^^^^^^ a classic turn using only the kite and none of the wave for power. might as well be standing on the beach.

Why don't you post some good wave shots like this (featured on CORE mag)

Is it because he is unhooked, unstrapped and using a death leash?
Face it your pic of the guy in the flats has got nothing on Ryland's shot.
lol.

If you have ever surfed decent sized waves you would realize that this is not a long way out front to begin a bottom turn. What's with all this "on the flats" toss?

Exactly, I reckon he looks fairly well positioned to backdoor it.
Have you got another sequence shot Slave.

high risk of a total trashing,
maybe your first day on a week long kite holiday

He is totally out of position on the wave. If you had caught this wave from out the back and were in proper position nearest the crest of the wave, would you get off when called by the flats guy???

My guess is he's probably think of doing a nice tight turn under the lip, wash off some speed, pick a line and pull in to what looks like a potential barrel.

What's it really matter, he's out in perfect conditions having fun.

Wish I could be doing the same right now, other tack though

Rylands is a sick shot...He's one of the best at capturing all the different angles, love his work.

Out of position? Bollocks!!

I dont reckon its always possible to be in the opitimum position (an armchair critics version) on a wave, or tight in the pocket. We all aint parko are we.

You often find yourself out of position, and when it happens its always possible to turn "being out of position" into something pretty awesome.

Who cares where he is on the wave at any one moment. If I was in his position where he is in this pic I'd be frothing at the options ahead.

IMO he looks to be purposefully setting something up.

Bring on the sequence.

Are you arguing against yourself???????? Cause besides the bollocks comment you seem to be agreeing he is out of position.

I disagree (doesn't mean I'm right though), a surfer may not have faded that much but he is a kitesurfer, with the extra speed and power we can get from the kite it allows you to fade more and line up a section from a bit further back.
It looks like a fairly decent cross shore blowing, If he had just gunned it straight down the line he would be out on the shoulder in no time like a lot of kiters new to waves would do.

Love your posts that get people thinking and offering different opinions waveslave.

Yeah arguing against myself, I often do it No just writing quickly as things come to mind. Re-reading I can see how you took it out of context. I was writing on 2 levels or trains of thought.

I meant "bollocks" to you making that call. You have no imagination or perhaps simply experience on a wave - I dont agree he is out of position (I never wrote he was). Perhaps in your armchair critic point of view he is, but not mine. To me he looks to be purposefully in that position.

"I dont reckon its always possible to be in the opitimum position (an armchair critics version)"

and

"You often find yourself out of position"

is me thinking - even if it is determined he out of posi, it doesnt really matter, it often happens and is not the end of the story. It can be turned into something more than just the mainstream.

Looks to be Siberia to me and it looks like he's gonna get worked. I'd like to see a sequence to see how he makes out.

That being said, i'd be cowering in fear on the beach so he's already got me beat.

Who gives a flying one about the tired chestnut of powered kite-surfing versus truly surfing the wave (take a frikkin laxative) that is a tasty wave the likes of which I wish we got around here!

Ryland's shot is a pearler but I'd be stoked to gumby my way through either wave and would p!zz myself laughing if I heard some of the whinging pedant dribble about being on the flat and the unworthyness.

Location? Nth West Oz?

hopefully he does. He could downloop the kite, and as the pull dissapears, park it at 12 and surf the wave, using the kite only to get around sections.

Since 2006, when I got conditions like these (except lefts), saying he was out of position was only an opinion. I've surfed since I was 9, and on a kite I love to backdoor sections, not whole waves. All wind directions dedicate you take a different approach to how you fly the kite to make it work.but this is perfection.

to get barreled in these conditions requires timing and the ability to read waves and a long time surfing, something that many kitesurfers lack no offence. Side-shore conditions are perfectas the lines dont get pulled by the lip, but you must stay higher in the barrel and the wave needs to be powerful and breaking on something decent. Cross-offshore, the barrel stays wider but you have the issue of getting too deep and your lines get distorted.

Come on slave, when's the next issue..........Barrel or top turn on the froth?
Peace out Factor 5

Not likely I would say unless the picture is flipped, or there is a very rare Northerly blowing.

Edit: oh I thought you were talking about the original shot, but I'm guessing now that you meant Rylands.

one of those fat ones that just feather for awhile then crumble, not to worry its still all good
he could now engage 4wd and plough over the top of the white water, with the kite powering him through it all
