went out today. .... everyone was on 10's so I followed the pack. abit underdone so i slapped the 13 up.

ahhh there it is perfect power. just at the point before trimming. big floaty boosts pillowy soft landings... speed. loops. good fun.

ahhh.

i like those sessions were the kite is right there in the sweet spot.

Everyone else was on 10s today... but I felt I needed practice in less-desirable conditions so I took out the 8. Totally worth it, I had to work for the power and learnt a lot.

Or you could do what my brother did today. 25 knots on an 11m edge so that crew has to hold him down when he launched. man he was going BIG.

Looks like his big wave antics, lack of sensible wave choice and lack of self preservation when surfing is coming out on the edge !!

ahh. you boys miss interpret my post or i worded my post badly. I'm not boasting riding a 13 when others were on 10's. It was one of those weird days that looked windier than it was. a few people put up 10's and 9's and everyone else that turned up followed suit. as did I. but after 40 mins of mowing the lawns with tiddly jumps i though stuff it not powered enough.

Then stepped into the 13.

If your loving small kite wave riding. there is nothing wrong with that. Its the best option if you want to "surf" the wave closest to a surfer.

Wind pulled up towards the end of the session and I got a little past the "perfect" point. prob 23 od knots.. on the 13 edge. so yes i too can be silly too.

Well I say 25 might be 25 gusting up a bit. We get gusty wind here must be the estuary. Yeh I might be exaggerating a bit he wasnt like out of control but he was at his limit as we both don't touch the depower strap!

Interesting comment about the 2 foot "mush". I hear some ppl say this when talking about perth metro waves. Maybe a bit pedantic, but every time I see this I think technically its an incorrect comment.. The waves albeit small, tiny even are actually punchy sucky little shorey fkers.

Probably why they still a lot of fun to smash lips and punt off etc, even a cutback or two ;) I dont really have a problem with how small they are when kiting and I often think its great that kiting makes such little waves still so fun..

Was discussing this local wave type with my shaper, Dave Lewis. He thinks the same and we shape my kiting boards with a decent amount of rocker for "in pocket" turns (just have a very short flat section in the middle of the rocker/board - to get speed going quickly when first setting off, or tacking.. then once riding the board rides on the tail rocker for the most part). Mushy/spilling type waves are actually hard to find on our beachies which suit a flat rocker. Most guys in Perth are riding flat rockered boards bought off the shelf with the design targeted at "mushy" waves thinking this is the best performing shape for Perth metro.. think again

Still mush to me...hey each to their own of course. Some people just don't like the vertical dimension...just like most windsurfers ...(not all of course, seen some sick windsurfing height - but Jesus they come down hard).

Just being sensible?!?! mmmm, I think that means I should lift my game! Seriously though I do think I am trapped in wavesailing mindset and relearning the same stuff I did then on new gear. Though I dont think I ever ripped out of a turn as fast as I can with a kite. Might have to try a twin tip and explore the vertical more seriously I think.

Saw Storm Surfers 3D at the Surfaid event last night. Reckon even your bro would have been impressed with some of the take-offs and poundings. And turtle dove shoal off Dongara is unbelievable.

Mate some of the stuff they are doing on strapless surfboards are just blowing my mind. I ride strapless SB myself now and then for kicks and giggles and trying to master the skim only then do you appreciate how bloody good these guys are.

But give me crazy overpowered boosting on my edge anyday!!

Just sit on any metro beach for a while, more examples of wave sailing disciples that the aerial crew.

Got a young bloke I mentored from last winter, grew up surfing, that was his sport period. He also is wave sailing but has started to ask about the 'old school' stuff now. A bit of both I reckon is the way to go. Spend some time with cauncy he will inspire you to explore this form of the sport. Funny we call it old school I was riding surfboards only in the early days, I call that old school for that reason. Lol. But yeh I'm caught in a time warp. Oh well.

They don't call him maddog for nothing. That's just the start! Thing is every session he has a brain fade at least once. He's getting into winds and kite sizes now, that a mistake could cause serious problems.

maybe I'm just being the older wiser boring brother...let him go!!!

You want silly height, intense speed and power, incredible glide and actually be able to control it all...only one kite to be on...
