Thinking about getting a shark shield freedom 7 for kitesurfing, dose anyone use one or thinking of getting one?
I dont know if it would work for kite surfing.
What do you think?
If I kited in a sharky place and was prone to dropping the kite in the drink and facing a swim in - then yeah.
I suppose you could keep it on, but turn it on when you are "in" the water to save batteries.
Why don't you get one, try it out, and if you post back, we'll all know it works! ![]()
Before purchasing, I recommend that you consider the results from recent independent testing of the SS. Study results have been posted in the last month on Seabreeze by several forum members. Personally, I would not worry much about being attacked while kiting. Also, I am not sure the SS would actually work adequately at kiteboard speeds.
what are the stats for people getting taken by noah ??? odds have to be ridiculously low.. and in saying that ... i had a little one pop up and take a look at me at shearwater today!
I've heard they can actually attract sharks because of the electrical charge they produce but when the shark gets too close it repels them cause the charge is too strong close up. This means you will actually be putting your fellow kiting buddies at greater risk.
I wear a freedom 7 diving and i really wouldn't consider wearing it kiting, it has a 2m long antenna hanging off the back of it that I would find really annoying and kinda painfull if it gets wrapped around you.
If you're keen on a 'shark shield' for kiting look at the ESDS (Electronic Shark Defense System) different company to the Freedom 7 model but compact with no antenna. basicaly the same size as a leg rope strap.
Both only work in salt water so u'd have to make sure it doesnt dry out too much. Ive been thinkin about getting one for surfing :)
