Hi everyone been kiting quite a while now and can go both ways quite comfortably and even get up wind sometimes.
However, had a bingle and came off my board!!!!!! Ouch! !!!! Looked down and there was my board snapped straight down the middle.
Question: my mums got quite a lot of strong celle tape as she used to work at the stationary department at coles and I was kinda hoping this would be the perfect quick fix to get me back out on the water carving it up!
Would this work and how long would it be likely to last?
Hi CTB, glad to read you can go both ways. Question: did you snap your board in half laterally or longitude ways? If you broke it in half laterally, the strong Sellotape should work ok. Make sure you clean the surface area of the board with isopropanol alcohol before applying the Sellotape.
Apply the tape with a 'criss cross' pattern to give optimal strength and durability.
If done correctly, your board should be good as new, possibly stronger, and should last quite some time. Did this to my own board several years ago, and still use it regularly. Good luck with the repair. Any chance you could upload some pics of the break/repair?
Thanks for the advice Dorothy. Its snapped laterally so I will definitely crisscross with the tape repair. Ill get some pics up soon!!!
Hey ctb,
We all feel for ya mate. a similar thing happened to me once with my board too, I managed to cellotape mine but it didnt last. i think i only used the regular stuff, i wish my Mum worked at Coles stationary department. Good advice from Dorothy, I agree entirely with the criss cross theory - sounds like Dorothy knows his stuff.
Love to see some pics of the broken and repaired board ctb, good luck and hope youll be back out there carving it up soon.
Forgot to mention, make sure you use 3M Sellotape and not the no brand Coles tape.
3M Sellotape is waterproof, the other tape uses water base adhesive which delaminates when wet.
Thanks again Dorothy for the advice but unfortunately I only have the coles brand! I wish my mum worked at bunnings in the cellotape section in aisle 6!!
Chewing gum or blue tack can make up for the coles brand only - gives better flex to the repair and is waterproof so should last many seasons - get back out there!!
God Daaam Lambie !!! you are a genious, thats an awesome idea.
CTB, I think Bunnings are taking on new staff and my Uncle Lambert used to work there. I'll ask hime to have a word with the assistant manager who also worked there (a few years back ) and maybe he can speak to the personnell department and just maybe your Mum could get an interview, imagine that !!
Good luck and fingers crossed. ![]()
ps. its not what youknow, its who you know these days. ![]()
For a true fix on short notice in a country that doesnt sell resin.
Epoxy car bog..... Get some wood bamboo (2 pieces are best) etc..., and puncture it through the foam.... Line it up exactly. Sand the outside resin with a rock if need be. Apply car bog with the board 2mm apart, all of it. wrap the board with glad wrap and squash resin into the rails and deck.
Well I took my cello tape repaired board out this arvo on its maiden voyage. It was a cranking 14 knots and I was cruising along and I through a hard turn and bang!!!! The board snapped in another section. Wtf the tape repaired section held up! Dorothy you were right, the cello tape repair is the strongest part of the board. Looks like I'll be cello taping the whole board up now...
Clearly the board is the weak link - but, as you like the shape, just copy it and make a new board entirely from tape. Coles kiteboards - "down down!"
