I was out kiting in about 20knt ne wind at about 5pm this arvo on the lake at the enterance, central coast, when over about 5mins the wind died to approx 5-8knts. I couldnt keep my kite up, but thought the wind will come back soon. It didn't I swam in about 500m and then walked back to my launch area. This took about 45mins and when I got back still no wind. There was no change in the weather and when I got home I looked at the graph and was amazed to find nothing out of the ordinary. I should note that I have kited here quite a few times before and the location is ok in every wind direction from east to north

Here is norah head graph from this arvo. Its located about 10kms up the coast from where I was

Can any of you people with a better understanding of what makes the wind work explain what happened to the wind today?

Hi Bennie,

My thoughts are the temperatures today were very extreme close to 30 degrees on the coast. - A Seabreeze can be very fickle in these temperatures. My bet is that the Norah Head Weather station is about more east than the the Lake Entrance. Due to the extra hot day, there was too much hot air to rise high enough to allow the seabreeze to enter into the low pressure area. The same thing happened in Wollongong today. No wind in Wollongong, but blowing 25knots + in Gerroa and Sydney, drove north and plenty of wind, got back to the house and dead still. - Go Figure. - Norah Head is on a bit of a peninsula, so presume it was still picking up the seabreeze. By the sounds of it the seabreeze was still there further south, but propably a bit further to sea.

Hope this explains it a bit

the south channel did not look like that all day, perhaps on that website, but that looks like when the cool change was coming through from the south west.
Have a look at this chart, you can see it was gusting the hot northly/west all over the shop until about 2pm when the change hit and it swung to the south.

you can see this graph at earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/engage/dynamic-earth-updates/bay-winds

I think Kiteryders explanation has merrit. You were only a couple of kms east of me and you had plenty of wind while I had none. I guess it's a lesson learnt about what to expect on the really hot days. Funny thing is I had a fun light wind sesh at the same spot on saturday, drove east to nth entrance beach after, only to find the wind too light there. Go figure!
