If the red flags are flying at the range its a not a good idea to ride in that area(downwinders). There were 300 odd shooters that had to dis arm and pull the bolt out,
Not a happy bunch. The range of the kill shot is 3km so safey is a high poirity to them.
They do have spotters and beach marshals. We dont want to upset this lot they have big guns.
The WA Rifle Association has a rifle range next door to Campbell Barracks, located near the intersection of West Coast H'way & Alfred Road Swanbourne.
When the range is in use, red flags will be flying - large, red flags, and lots of them.
Given that rounds can carry for some distance (anyone from a military/shooting background please confirm/advise), the waters off Swanbourne are meant to be 'out of bounds' for a kilometre or so off shore.
Due to the fact that the range is frequently used during summer months on Saturday afternoon's, all of our downwinders that start south of City Beach are always conducted on Sundays.
Granted the chances of being hit by a random bullet are low, we would strongly encourage kiters to stay off that stretch of water when ever the range is in use.
Kiter v bullet....no brainer there...
I had a chat to one of the volunteers, safe distance is 400m offshore. - please correct me if i am wrong.
But yeah occurs on Saturday afternoons. There should be red flags on the beach also.
I thought it was 1 km out, but not a good idea if they are firing anyway, floreat to trigg is still a good run and if not long enough then go to mullaloo aswell
I allways wonder why they seem to have live firing on weekend days when the beaches are packed with people wanting to enjoy Perths beautiful weather and wind , They close off a couple of kls' stretch of beach(not sure exactly how much, but a far stretch) I don't think winging about it here will make much difference but , Why can't they conduct their live firing say days durring the week when it's not so busy ???I was just wondering if someone knows ?????
P.S. One day a couple years back I crashed my kite allong that strech and got blown onto the beach .A army guy on a quad came and started to harrass me telling me to F#^* off . Trouble was my lines were in a mess and it took me a little while to sort em' out . WOOPS . All the while I could hear loud gunshots . Woh ! I try to give it a wide birth these days . ![]()
