Buying an iPad was your first mistake.

The useless thing doesn't support USB card readers, or have an SD card reader built into it and Apple won't support these devices.

even if you could get connected to your ipad -

avchd is pretty hard to review on just about anything - i even have to jump through hoops on my fully featured Mc pro tower to watch the files

The only way i can watch it is to import to Final Cut or after effects (professional editing software that most people cant afford)

even mpegstreamclip wont play it.

Its one of those areas where the camera manufacturers have really let down / misled the consumer

I don't think there is a VLC app for iPad though ;-) there is one for Android!

But you are right, I have a Panasonic FT-1 and VLC plays the HD video fine. You can also upload it to Youtube OK. I'm not so sure on the editing front though...

didnt buy the ipad for that reason - had one at home for the kids

do edit it etc on mac with imovie and load to itunes and fine that way

really looking at instant replay on the bigger screen - for coaching purposes

can take mov files on the dslr - ipad recognises mov - do i need an app for that

otherwise does another tablet offer a solution?, samsung galaxy looks good but we might not get it

Nothing stopping you buying a Galaxy Tab 10.1 online from overseas.

The new Sony tablet looks pretty good too - and that has an SD card built into it.

Just did a quick search apads.com.au has a good range from what I can see.

www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MC531AM/A/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit?rdt=redirectionFromProductPage

Supports both usb camera connection (don't need a card reader if you can plug the camera directly into the ipad/iphone) and SD cards.

There was. One of the VLC developers works for Nokia so he threw a hissy fit because Apple were selling it for $0 instead of giving it away for free and it was pulled from the App store at VLC's request rather than Apple's. Go figure what the difference between the two is, but I suspect it had more to do with him working for Nokia than Apple selling it for $0.

Due to the high quality of avchd you will find that without converting first to a lower resolution and sound most tablets or pads will have problems playing this back or no support the only workable option is to convert on Mac or pc and transfer which defeats what you are trying to achieve until the processing capacity of these devices improves the functionality will come...unless you have option to change the native format it records in that will natively play back on your device....!

Bolgo, don't let these guys badmouth the Ipad, they're still stuck in the usb/card reader paradigm. Same thing happened when Apple got rid of floppies...they have vision and lead while others follow.

You can transfer vids easily wirelessly to your ipad, who needs dongles and cards? And yes it recognises mov files. ipad is great for watching movies.

Forgot to say, the app to transfer wirelessly and play your mov files is oplayer HD.

Enjoy taking your movies anywhere at a size perfect for personal watching

Bolgo, I just got a panasonic 1080 hd ft3 and it has option to record in either avchd or jpeg, check your camera settings.

Nice one Apple fanboi... I can smell the Patent lawsuits on your breath

Bolgo wants to use his iPad to play back video to people while they are on the beach, as a coaching tool. The easiest way to do this would be to whip the SD card out of the camera, plus it into a reader and play it off the card, using something like VLC.

Are you suggesting Bolgo sets up a wireless network at the beach?

LOL about the breath bit and ---yes--- I am a fanboi, BUT I'm just as stoked on Android etc

Ah sorry for the misunderstanding.

Thats easy, Bolgo!
1- Plug in you camera via the standard Ipad USB connector
2- 'Photos' stock app launches automatically
3- Play the new video to your student

(Yeh, I know: iPad r useless, eh? )

so used my canon d10 to video (cricket training actually)
pulled out sd card, use sd card reader - presto played beautifully on ipad after down loading mov file into photos
