this is a general question, aimed at those who have had the luxury of kitesurfing on the various coasts off australia.
In essence - I can pretty much work anywhere in Australia -; and when push comes to shove; may as well make a decision partly on reliable, good wind.
So far, have spent a yr in Mackay, and also Adelaide - but next year will settledown hopefully for good.
From what I can gather - WA seems to be the best bet for year round reliable wind - but what about alternatives - Victoria for example.
Looking forward to your input.
I have only kited WA and Cocos in Australia so im not qualified to make a national comparison but i am pretty damn happy with kiting in the west ![]()
Grew up in WA, live in Vic. WA is not just the best place to kite in Aust, but is possibly one of the most reliably windy, and uninhabited, and diverse (read flat lagoons, cross-on, cross-off... etc) places on the planet. ALL you need to do is leave Perth and you have crossed the one potential crowd negative. Mate... it's not even a choice, just go. (sorry yokels). Am just back for Easter and have kited 3 times, completely alone.
wa without a doubt. vic can be great but is inconsistent. south oz is reliably windy west of adelaide. qld is hit and miss as is northern nsw. i haven't ridden in tassie or southern nsw or the territory so can't comment on them.
but i would move to wa if you are basing your choice on wind.
there's never any wind in WA. it hasnt blown here all season...no waves either...lots of sharks and jelly fish with laser's for eyes...so yeah go to the ACT much better[}:)]
Depends what you do for work as well. If you find yourself finishing regularly after 5, Melbourne in the summer with 9pm sunset is great. Sure, St Kilda can get busy but I find once you get out off the beach and out at the end of the breakwater you have as much space as you like.
The northerlies in the winter can get pretty mean but you have to get down to Rye to enjoy it, which is at least an hour away by car.
wa does have the best wind but we don't have day light savings so it goes dark just after lunch time. better off sticking to the eastern states ![]()
Tassie .Great wind ,great beaches ,great waves ,great bunch of kiters ,uncrowded ,none of the issues or impending bans that plague the busier states of Aust.
totally underrated !! (and no i am not being facetious)
yer WA has way too many sharks . It's unsafe to go into the water . We also have fatcat and wind never reaches over 10knots .
Thanks for the info guys
after all that - it looks like I may be going to maitland - just outside of Newcastle, NSW.
Whats the low down on Newcastle? re kiting......
Cheers

Yeah, WA is no good at all. No wind all season and not exciting enough, i.e. no sharks..I'ld rather go to QLD for some bullshark experience...
