Hope there is someone who can give me some info about 49er racicing
I have an old 49er (Aus 220) and thinking about getting back into sailing it, the last time I sailed it was 2007. Since then Ive been kiteboarding and sailing tornados.
I heard the 49er has a new rig and the hull needs to be modified. What changes have been made and is it still possible to race with the old rig.
And where is the best place to race out off in perth on the river?
I would like to bet the boat ready for this summer season and race next year in the worlds

Mounts Bay yacht club have 49ers. I think most of them still have the old rig.
I was considering getting a boat for the worlds as well. Can't imagine I'll be any where near the front but could be fun.
I dont know about 49ers but i know mounts bay have pretty much gotten rid of their 29er fleet. The tcyc here in Rockingham might be your best bet.
I've got an even older 49er (AUS140) sail it with the old rig. They seem competitive with the new rig over 10kts, lower wind range the carbon rig is better. But at my level it's not the rig holding me back...
As far as the worlds go, I think you have to apply to sail, not anyone can enter as there is limited places for each country. Check here, http://www.49er.net.au/news.php

So the 49er now has a new carbon rig (as of about June 2009) and they are heaps better, controls work better, can set up the mast better, there really is no compairison between the old and new. If u want to race and go well u have to have the new rig. Plus u can not be in the gold fleet at the worlds without the new rig. As for Perth, the best place is Mounts Bay, or down at Freo (I know its not on the river).
The boats dont have to be modified but they are now coming out of new moulds with stiffer more beefed up wings, a new support beam from the cntreboardcase to the back of the boat, and they are said to be faster downwind. Havnt sailed them yet but the new one is sitting in my garage
And the worlds in December 2011 are by invite only, Australia only gets one spot then others have to apply and there will probably only be about 6 Australians (hopefully myself).
There is however a regatta in Perth at Freo in November of this year, with several internationals coming to it.

I don't think that is quite right.
Each country has a quota from minimum 1 boat up to 6 boats. If quotas are unfilled other entries can be taken.
Theres the exact definition for you if i was so wrong
"This will not be an open event, as each country will be given a quota of competitors in each class based on the international performance ranking of each country’s sailors. A minimum of 1 boat to a maximum of 6 boats per country will be allowed. These quotas will be decided by ISAF and Yachting Australia will be advised of its quota by June 2011. Australia as host nation may however be allowed extra positions if other countries do not take up their full entitlement."
