Alloy ex racer

Maxiyacht1 on eBay has a couple of gems for sale again. If you thought Sunburst in Adelaide was a good deal watch this ex racer and see how she goes.

Great if you had plenty of time cos looks like she need a big bucket load of work - but hell at the current price she'd surely be worth much more just in scrap alone

Lead and alloy are about $4.50 at the moment.

That's per kilo. Metal prices are very low at the moment. Best to sail it instead. I certainly would not be painting the topsides, instead I would go the bare look like Pen-Duick V. Non skid paint on the deck only.

Not sure if you can buy it any more but I used Epiglass PA 10 etch primer on the bare aluminium on my Peterson 42. I prepared it by sanding it shiny with a sanding disc and then applied it by brush.

The solvent in the paint is as volatile as metho and a tad toxic. Metho is the recommended clean up solvent for brushes etc but definitely should not be used for thinning.

The solvent/thinner is the active ingredient in the etching process and the red paint body is the sealant on the surface. I believe nothing works better on aluminium.

I climbed into my anchor locker with a tin of it, a brush and NO breather mask and painted. Lucky I did not pass out. It burnt my nostrils out for six months during which time I could not smell anything.

The info on the can said it could be used on alloy or steel. I tried it on some sand blasted steel wheel rims and it was quite ineffective, busting out with rust two months later.

For aluminium that stuff is the gear.

Definitely better for buying as everyone out there wants everything for nothing and most are not prepared to pay a fair price for a fair product.

Buying usually. The only problem is when multiple people have the same taste as me and bid the price up. It really does show the true value of items actually for sale, notice the bids the alloy Cole is now attracting. Maxiyachts other yacht is still a gift at the moment.

EBay is also hard to beat for buying stuff at fixed prices. I need some new hubs for a boat trailer. Chinese hubs and bearings are $54 each at Supercheap. EBay $50 a pair including postage for Australian stuff.
