Desperate to get a kite for my Eureka 32 cat.
Need something dead simple as it's just me most times.
I don't have a prodder.
There's a UK Halsey Assymetrical in a chute that was built for a Roberts 29 advertised on the noticeboard for $1500, apparently in perfect nic.
Is this a good price? (I'm not good at negotiating
).
Would it be an adequate size for my size cat?
How do I run it without a prodder? Brace through a block on the windward bow and sheet likewise on leeward?? I do have a pole from a 24ft yacht??
Any advice appreciated..have a fab weekend

I don't know anything about multies , but on the sloops we don't run poles with the assermetrical , they are just a big jib on a strop at the tack.
The sock I recon is more of a pain than a help. My opinion only thousand will disagree.
Hope that is some help.
Cheers
Hi, we are in the same boat (sorry couldn't resist) solo same size cat
I use a big symmetrical in a sock really easy to use with two sheets off each clew, one to the bow and to the stern.
I can use the main as well but usually just throw it up on it's own and read a book
Hi,
The kite for the Roberts will be too full to use effectively on a cat unless you are just going to be running downwind with it. to make full use of an asymmetrical on a cat it needs to be cut flat.
$1500 is a lot for a 2nd hand spinaker - Even if it is in good knick.
I guess you are after something around 60m2 give or take..?? Cruising use, so solid & forgiving.
Stay in touch with your local sailmakers - I find on the west coast they seem to know of numerous traded kites that are up for grabs.
I would be thinking of the order of a few $100 for something in decent condition, perhaps $500 tops for something in good knick.

Happy Monday everyone
Thanks fellas for the advice...both practical and financial about the kite.
Sorry taken so long to get back...bloody study getting in the way of sailing![]()
....although I did get dragged away from it for a while on Saturday on a sssshhhhhh.......mono...LOL!![]()

60m2 asso would be pretty close to an 18 ft skiff kite. Theys ell kites pretty frequently so hit up them
Badinfluence let us know if you find something kitewise and how it turns out.
Looks like I will be losing a hull and joining the cat crowd with a 30' boat joining the family soon, all being well. It has no kite either, plus 41 ft mast is bigger than I've ever had before, so the wardrobe is bare.
You've got to have a good think about 'what' you want your kite for.....
Set and forget deep down wind?? cruising?? (i call mine the fuel saver as many boats get frustrated and motor in light down wind conditions)
or
Flat cut working the angles down wind?? racing?? (your genny barber hauled will do a really good job too)
thanks guys for the further info. Kite off an 18-footer...yeah!! Go a symmetrical as well, just for fun hehehe!
I'm just cruising (race on a mono...yeah, yeah, i know, doesn't sound like it makes sense, but it's one of those 'you had to be there' things lol) so it's a fuel-saver like you call it Jedibrad. In a former life, the motor was always running and I hated it...now I'm free to do what I want and sail my boat the way I want, thus inspiration for the kite. I like the idea of the set and forget kite only without a main...less moving parts so to speak. Oh, and to read a book!!! If only for the cash for an autohelm as well lol!!..........but that's why you have children hehehe![]()

I tend to think that an 18' skiff kite would be too lightly constructed, bearing in mind that it was designed to move a hull weight of 170 kilos not one approximately 3.5 tonnes. With that in mind it may be more prudent to go with something more suitable for that weight of boat.
Aint that Callala Dump shop just the best? The number of sailboard sails and masts I've gotten from there .... at peanut prices, just brilliant.
Hi Trace, Thanks for your email. I didn't mean to make you feel bad or anything. You are a real nice person and I was wrong to post what I did. I'm fine with everything. Cheers Trace.
