I am wondering if the gas unit would better than the heat bead Bar B Que's?
I dont have gas on board but it might be quicker to get going than heat beads?

Really? bump? ..... are we not fast enough for you?

forget the heatbeads, you want a heat source that is instantly controllable and can be instantly extinguished. While gas will still present a fire hazard it will be nothing when compared to the beads.

When it is a bit blowey and you are using heat beads, they burn incredibly hot and will frazzle your steaks.

A stainless steel BBQ is not necessarily the best to have. Many people are using the Weber Baby Q on their yachts. Excellent product if you get the one with the higher lid and temp gauge.

There are several other portable type BBQs around too for not much money which will do the job just as well. Check Bunnings, BBQs Galore and other camping stores.

I'm getting tired of my "Cookout" gas barbie's flame blowing out every time there's a gust of wind. Although it's mounted on the stern it's not 100% protected from the wind - as indeed few places are on a boat. I've already replaced the thermocouple thinking the bbq was overly zealous in shutting itself down, but that's not the problem.

So I'd be interested in learning how well the Webers - and other brands for that matter - work when it's blowing.

I inherited one of the heat bead ones when I brought my boat.

Had a heap load of dirty beads and associated gear, first thing off the boat!

There are two grills in the BBQ which have burnt out due to the beads.

Because of the replacement costs have never got around to replacing them.

The Weber Baby Q sounds like a better deal if I ever decide to get a BBQ.

PS. Anybody want to buy it, all offers considered. Pick up only!

I like the idea of the weber one thing I dont like is hot rocks and open grill Id rather have a plate to cook on I feel the open grill tend to taint what ever your cooking where as a plate mean I can cook breakfast as well and its easier to clean
But I see theres an option on the Baby weber for a plate
Masters sell them for $266
m.masters.com.au/
Ill be adding a breakfast plate
www.masters.com.au/product/900021808/weber-baby-q-q100-breakfast-plate
and make a stern rail table to sit it on when its used tuck it away when its finished with
good choice I think

Bought a charcoal one off my mate for 20 bucks the other day, then I saw it in the Ww.cattledog for $199.
I nearly fainted.
It is ok on calm days, you can hang it over the side but it is a pain to get going - true. Go for the gas one, mate.
It was worth the twenty quid thou.(not a cent.moore!)

I have a heat bead bbq for two reasons.

I like the taste of meet cooked with heat beads. It really gives a special flavor. (Probably carcinogenic)

It is a separate cooking fuel if ever my gas isn't working.

The biggest disadvantage is the time it takes to heat them up. Light them earlier.

You also need to ensure you empty it well over the side to avoid the dust coming inboard.

I think Ill go with a gas bottle as the boat has a kero stove I can hang the bottle over the side rail and leave it there and make a couple of rails to hold the weber baby Q on those and probably buy a bag to stow it in when not in use . I can see a nice cockpit breakfast on that as well as a Bar B Q at night when swinging on an anchor < dreaming again <Wanker

My Bar B Q at home is from a collection of hard rubbish same model and I optioned it from other hard rubbish same model I have a drive around every hard rubbish day and replace any parts that it needs and have optioned it so it got a full width solid plate now and gave it a coat of paint and its one bad boy now has its own stand and sides only small but suit me and my lady friend and any one that drops round

So Sorry cooking dinner and writing this
I have a Bar B Que at home here that was some ones hard rubbish , It had a grill (slotted plate)with no solid cooking plate which I prefer .So I kept driving around the local streets after work till I found several of the same models and some had solid BBQ plates which I bought home scrubbed them up and wash and polished ever thing and gave the BBQ a good clean and paint . Works a treat
I also need to replace this old key board as much as I love it ( probably 10 years old ) had its day I think

Some times it's not the gas or heat beads that make a bbq dangerous. Have you ever cooked lamb chops on the boat barby. The fat lights up really well and you'd want to make sure you keep the lid handy. My barby looks like the one in the picky and it always pays to have your wits about you when you fire the little bugger up. My lid is on a cable and I wish it was hinged like the one in the picture.

MorningBird please tell us you're joking when you say you tip all your used charcoal grease and accumulated crap from your BBQ over the side when you are finished cooking, that's disgusting.

Whether to have a BBQ permanently mounted to your taff rail or not, be it charcoal or gas heated is a decision that needs to be determined by how often you have and how much you like BBQ dinners.

If a yacht is tied up in a marina most of the time it can be quite fashionable to have regular BBQs in the cockpit.

Having a BBQ permanently mounted on the taff rail will present challenges and require compromises with sailing and boat handling. Think about it.

For me the best BBQ is on a beach, preferably with no one else except the ship's company attending and the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

For that a portable gas BBQ is the best option considering most island beaches (particularly in Queensland) are National Park areas upon which open fires are not allowed.

Yachts from 25 to 35 foot long will usually have a crew of 2 to 4 people and a portable BBQ is quite adequate to cook food for that number. Also a portable BBQ usually has a carry bag which means it can easily be stashed in a locker. If a cockpit BBQ is the order of the evening, it can be sat on a cockpit seat or table with maybe a board under it for heat insulation.

Another advantage of the Weber BabyQ type with a hood is that for smaller yachts that may not have a stove with oven fitted below, the hooded BBQ can be used to cook a roast.

HG02, I think you are getting a tad ahead of yourself talking about BBQs right now. You have yet to put a rig on your yacht.

A few fringe benefits would be nice Cisco to keep my morale up I now have a fridge working for cool drinks and food but would like to offer my lady a BBQ on the cockpit to keep her happy while working on the boat . I still have lots of work to complete on the inside . And would like to progress slowly with the stove and not rush it . Ill have it swing in a month or so but the burners I feel will better If I go through them throughly. and parts are not readily available in Oz.
I could buy some German burners which are now sold by Taylors and well as other places , But Im sitting on the fence still I can see that who's bought them so far are completely happy with there purchases .
Also I have not settled completely on what bench tops to use , The Corian bench top would be nice but are on the heavy side and Ive been tossing up with choice of either Laminex and Corian bench tops. The Laminex would be glued to marine ply

So I'm curious Cisco, do you think it ok to throw used heat beads covered in whatever into the ocean? As yachties I would naturally assume that we try to protect our oceans from such waste?

You are obviously on a mission and I am not going to stoush with you except to say the biggest and worst pollution of our oceans is plastic. It is the biggest and worst pollution of our lands as well.

Relatively speaking, a few burnt heat beads (potash) with a bit of meat fat on it is harmless.

What do you do with your spent BBQ matter?? Pack it up in a plastic bag and take it ashore so it can be put in landfill I suppose.

If you are seriously that concerned about it, stay off the water and become a Greens politician.

End of discussion.
