I have an Aries Wind Vane, but have no idea what it is for or how to use it. I can google it, but if there is anyone around Coffs Harbour who can give me some pointers would be appreciated. I understand that it is mostly used for long passages.
The Aries is a nice bit of kit. Windvanes are used to steer the yacht basically when you don't want to or to free you to do other jobs or just to steer the boat better than any helmsman.
I use mine more than 95% of the time at sea and even in the estuary on occasions. I tack by hand steering but engage the vane immediately on the next tack. Probably hand steer for 30 seconds or so.
Plenty of literature about. Try this free download. www.bluemoment.com/downloads/selfsteering.pdf
Hi McNaughtical, is the Aries already fitted to the boat?
I am looking to do a big singlehanded trip later this year, I fitted a Raymarine EV100 a few months ago but talking to the guys at the marina they advise getting another complete Raymarine kit as a backup or get an Aries or Monitor wind vane.
I think the Aries might be the easier system to fit, But I could be wrong?
Anyway, I'm on the lookout for one of the above vanes, so if someone on here can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

welcome Mcnaughtical . another option may be to find an auto electrician or three . get a price from a couple of them , then help the contractor do the job , that way you will know the installation...............

Thank you Sands, I would gladly help anyone do the installation. . that's a good idea.
I wouldn't advise a auto electrician mostly they only know auto stuff, you will need to clarify to them it needs to be marine quality! Better actualy to learn to do it yourself it's really not rocket science the wiring part !
