Can someone tell me what's wrong with my 2 speed Barlow 27 before I dismantle ?
When grinding on sheet it slips a heap of gears and is quite dangerous. It has not been serviced for some time and perhaps I'm thinking that was not such a good idea.
Cheers.
Sounds like a stripped gear. Only one way to tell.
Pull it apart, on a calm day and dont drop anything over the side.
(from experience.......).
Pretty simple winches to service, not sure about parts but GOOGLE
is your friend.
I reckon it's done a spring on a pawl.
As was said, take apart carefully, laying out all the bits on a rag. Be very careful as you take the drum off as some stuff might drop out.
New springs and pawls should be available from most good chandleries, just don't grease the pawls, machine oil only.
Will give you the news tomorrow when I strip it. Makes it hard on port tack and in over 20 knts heading south to windward could be a bit of a struggle .
Update! Silly me! The paws were clogged up with old grease which had dripped down over time from the gears therefore not allowing the paws to engage into the groves.problem solved by cleaning and lightly oiling. Now that I'm a expert at stripping and servicing the winches so geuss what I'm up to tomorrow?
