Barlow 27 winch

Can someone tell me what's wrong with my 2 speed Barlow 27 before I dismantle ?

When grinding on sheet it slips a heap of gears and is quite dangerous. It has not been serviced for some time and perhaps I'm thinking that was not such a good idea.

I reckon it's done a spring on a pawl.

As was said, take apart carefully, laying out all the bits on a rag. Be very careful as you take the drum off as some stuff might drop out.

New springs and pawls should be available from most good chandleries, just don't grease the pawls, machine oil only.

The gear teeth are fairly beefy in Barlow winches and not likely to strip.

Big problem might be the keyhole carrier slots for the pawls. If they are worn out it is almost a write off.

I believe Arco winches have the licence for Barlow winch spares.

If replacement part costs are more than $500 I would be ditching them and getting a pair of Anderson Two Speed 40 ST winches or you might get away with a pair of 28s depending on the size of your yacht.

On my Van de Stadt 34 I have 28s for halliards and 40 for sheets.

They are all stainless and the ratchet system is completely different and virtually fail proof. Once you have had Andersons, you would never have anything else.

The 28s cost about $1,000 each and the 40s about $1,300 last time I checked.
