Hi, Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I have...
I have just bought myself a Hood 23... It sails beautifully, except when I try to sail down wind or even close to down wind.
As I come around and let the boom out, it ends up about 45 degrees to the mast. The boom vang doesn't really help at all.
To me the rigging looks correct, it is quite unsalable like this, and potentially dangerous.
My experience is on larger boats with heaver rigs. It seems that the boom needs to be heaver in order to keep it down.... (I don't think that is a solution, Just an observation)

Sounds like you need to do some work on your vang. Maybe take it further out along your boom or make it more powerful by doubling it's ratio.
When sailing off the wind many people, myself included, rig a preventer from the boom to a suitable eye out on the rail.
Putting your mainsheet on a traveller will help too.
Post a pic of your rig and we might be able to see what is wrong.
Certainly sailing with your boom up at 45 degrees is bad, bad, bad.

Playing with the Vang might be a good option, I want to extend the rope for single handed sailing anyway..
