Hi,
Finally sat down and started studying my charts for my mandurah to bunbury trip.
Noticed the bouvard reef. Didnt even know they were there so glad i bought the charts haha.
Just wondering if there is any difference between going inside or outside the reef? Going outside would be an easier course to navigate and less likely to go wrong but adds considerable distance to my voyage. Going inside seems trickier with a narrower band of sea to weave through but is quicker.
Any recommendations?
Thanks :)
Once inside, you are committed for the trip - Not many places to get out.
If the breeze is persistant NE-E-SE, then go inside. Nice flat water, and you can sail due south.
If it looks like the breeze will swing to a SW seabreeze (very common), or if it is a S-SW, then defintely stay outside. It will be much rougher, but you don't want to be pinned between a lee shore, trapped by outer reefs.
There are a few bumps you need to watch out for if you go inside.
