Hi

Any thoughts on a Bukh 36 with just over 4000 hours on it , raw water cooled. Also interested about the cavalier 37 (85 to 89 models)to whether or not the hull is solid or cored and the longevity of such old yachts.
Thanks

Has it a sail drive or gear box and prop shaft looks like a straight motor and gear box which is better In my thinking
Bukh 36 should be ok
On the back of the head there's a replaceable anode which should be changed regularly that's on the DV 20 and DV24 I'm not sure where the DV36 anode is fitted but it will be in the manual. If its been serviced regularly should be OK maybe a top end over haul at some stage just to freshen it up

There's a huge amount one could say about old diesels, but for a well-treated one 4000 hrs should be ok. Generally speaking, if it starts right away it has good compression, and your problems should not be huge. Not nothing, but hopefully not huge.

Cheers, Graeme

While on the subject has anyone repowered their boat recently and give me some idea of what it has cost. Older Volvo Penta diesels can be repowered with a later mode with a kit so I am planning to do that. But getting anyone to give me a price has proved fruitless. Forums on the topic generally just return waffle with no-one saying it has cost me $x. So has anyone actually repowered a boat and what did it cost?

Hi HaveFun-I was quoted $14.5k to repower our NS33 from the local slipway down here. That was sometime ago however('09 in fact) for a new D1 Volvo Penta and saildrive unit.
I ended up rebuilding the old Volvo 2002 unit which I assume you still have in yours.
Since selling Cool Runnings over a year ago, I believe the motor is still going strong, but getting spares for these will prove very difficult as time goes on.

The latest motor boat, I put in a 3 cyl,30hp Betamarine. The cost for that in 2012 was $9.5k(ex GST) incl dash panel, wiring harness and a shaft coupling.

It was mentioned to me by a couple of suppliers, that a new motor can be replaced with the yacht still in the water, whilst using the existing saildrive leg.(saves on hauling out fees).
Marine engine pricing will also fluctuate with the currency of the Aus dollar.

Hope this gives you some idea-C.R.

Hi Karmarules,

regarding the Bukh, the service history will be the most important factor, it should be OK if servicing has been correctly carried out.

I have owned a 89 Cavalier for around 5 years. I love the boat. I sail mostly with two on the boat, used for anything from day sails to a couple of weeks away. The rig is fairly simple, but she still has a reasonable level of performance. Onthe other hand, if the family want to head out for a day sail the cockpit fits 6 adults And a couple of kids in comfort.

The hull is solid glass. Mine has needed treatment for osmosis, but that is not unusual fora boat of this age. repair cost woukd depend on extent and how the repair is carried out.

The real concern as boats age is not the hull, but the bits that are bolted to the hull, engine, rig, anything electrical etc. If you do not feel competent to assess then get a survey. For any boat this age talk to the surveyor about osmosis, and how they will check for that. After my experience. I would insist on moisture testing for any boat of that age.

My boat is on Lake Macquarie if you would like a look, and a run through on what I would look at.

I just replaced a 2003 and sd120 with a new 30hp volvo cost for motor and sail drive $12000 fitting $2500 plus all the extras . A friend replaced an old Yanmar with a 30 betta did all the work himself was about $13000 all up his was not a sail drive but include the larger gear box and his included all the incidentals.

My boat was repowered with a Volvo md7b the week before I bought it. Fully reconditioned unit, better than new real marine Volvo. $2250. They used to be advertised in the back of the "Afloat" magazine. Smooth and quiet, should last 20 to 30 years will average abuse.
