Has anyone tried the Coastgaurd tracking app?
looks like it might be alright ,even for just tracking for family and friends , if you don't want to fork out the dollars for a yellow brick or similar.
Would be interested to hear if anyone had used it yet.appears you would need to stay in reception range.

I downloaded it but it got too hard for reasons I now don't recall. I use Boat Beacon which is much simpler and will log you from Manly to Mooloolooba. It was recommended by the radio room at MBTBC who monitor the coast guard radio week days.

how does this app work? ive read about it just now and it says it relies on an internet connection or gsm coverage. does it not use the devices gps? if it needs internet then its a bit limited.
For Boat Beacon you will need an Marine Safety code Identifier which is free but you need to apply for it. The Ap communicates on Mobile Phone networks and uses the GPS in your phone for your positioning and acts as an AIS as well. Different to the conventional VHF AIS system but it does work.

That's my understanding but if it gets popular will expand further afield. was originally conceived to log vessel movements in Moreton Bay.
