I'm staying in Eden for a week around Xmas time and was wondering about a suitable stretch of water on which I can take out the family in our dinghy (a Tasar). I'm experienced but the other half is not and the kids are under 10, so I'm after somewhere fairly sheltered rather than a white-knuckle planing experience.
I was looking at Google maps but couldn't see anywhere good to launch from in Twofold Bay. The Snug Port ramps are for commercial use only apparently, and the beaches didn't seem to have road access for getting the trailer close enough to the water for us to launch the dinghy by hand (a long carry is possible but no fun).
Does anyone know anywhere in Eden (or up to 30 mins drive away) that would be good for recreational dinghy sailing? Is Lake Merimbula an option, or is it too small/shallow?
Thanks for any advice,
Andrew
I suggest you ask the Twofold Bay Yacht Club. Try:
Commodor: Robin Arthur tel:6496 3704 email:[email protected]
Vice Commodore: Kim Martyn tel: 64951089email:[email protected]
Out of interest, please post how you get on.
Twofold Bay YC is located in Quarantine Bay, head west from Snug Cove on Google Earth. There is a great sheltered, public access beach with heaps of parking near the clubrooms and access ramp to the beach. There may be class titles hosted by TBYC at that time of year, but this will not stop you accessing the beach regardless. Cheers Andrew
Wallagoot Lake about 30 minutes north, is also a beautiful and safe spot for getting the kids feet wet. Is in a national park so access during non club sailing days may be an issue, the club contact is Tony on 0427 534 548 who is also one of the nicest gents you will ever meet.
You will also find Tony on www.catsailor.net/forum/26-paper-tiger-forum/ his user name there is tonyquoll
Thanks all for the help, but alas I've busted my collarbone and most likely won't be sailing this holiday.
If I do end up doing so, I'll be sure to post back with anything else I learn about places to sail near Eden.
Merry Xmas everyone! ![]()
