Hi all!

I am going to visit Australia for 4-6 months and buy yacht here(30
ft). The question I have is do I have to pass any certifications and obtain any licences due to local law to sail in Australia on personal yacht?

I read from some sources that many people don't have any personal sail licences because it is not prohibited to sail on own yacht if owner has all needed knowledge and experience.

Thanks in advance for any information!

You will need to get a "Recreational Vessel Operator's Certificate of Competency".
How is that for a mouthful??

Depends what state.

In WA you dont need anything unless you have an engine over 6hp then you need a skippers ticket.

Similarly, in NSW you'll only need a license for a power vessel if it is travelling at 10 knots or more. So if your 30-footer can do 10 knots under motor then maybe just use half throttle!

Any Victorians here that can explain their rules?
