I just had a heads up from NSWsailor about the RMS doing an expired flare collection along the NSW coast.
www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/safety-rules/safety-equipment/flare-disposal.html
I probably should finally get rid of the piles of old flares I have, some dating back to 1979
Just a note... the RMS site also said that flares will NOT be taken at NSW Service Centres, RMS or waterways offices,
but I heard a RMS rep say on the radio that only they are authorised to take expired flares.
Figure that!
Cant we let em off on nye?
only illegal if you get caught!
you're
a very bad cat Felix
Why is it illegal?? What law are you breaking?
I'm to the opinion its like a gun, Just depends on where, when and how you fire it to whether you break the law..
Cant we let em off on nye?
Felix are you looking to keep them until NYE 2017? NYE 2016 was about 1.5 weeks ago or haven't you sobered up yet?
... Did you mean the next night of celebration…Australia Day? Does Australia have too many holidays/long weekends in too short a time?…'Heads-down'…Incoming!!!
Coast Guards colecting expired flares and EPIRBs, in Queensland. EPIRB can be disposed through household rubbish
providing, it is de - activated, internal battery disconnected. EPIRB don't have LiPo or LiFe batteries, don't need special disposal .
wouldn't know how the other states handle disposal.
Also clubs or coast guard can arrange training day and dozens of flares can be fired. / time frame limit /.
thats what we did.
We used to let them off on the last race of the winter series, maybe the first, can't remember!
Good for crew to actually let one go and see how they work
There is some really dum **** on this thread.
By there very nature the contents of a flare are unstable.
Expired flares should never be used ever.
Three recent examples.
The student at a training day firing an expired parachute flare in correct manner where upon ignition it fired backwards blowing the detonator and part of the phororous flare into his stomach. When the company was sued the answer was it was out of date so no responsibility.
The flare demonstration with expired red flare that fired out the side of the tube when ignited.
Lastly the flare that fired itself while been handled by the instructor in a classroom and set fire to the ceiling.
Be careful people.

And none of that would have happend with a brand new flare???
There is risk when handling and using any pyro/propellant or explosive device .
There is also a difference between using them and setting them off.
I do find it hard to believe that they use old flares in demonstrations
I do not have any expired ones.................... they all went with my last yacht (made the buyer aware) he said he was going to set them up in Albany WA some time???? I have a brand new set on my yacht now, too expensive to set at OZ day
