Thought i Better start another thread before I completely highjack the other.

I'm getting conflicting views on what is a good draught to sail regularly from urangan. Aiming for kingfisher, platapus bay maybe one day venture out to lady Musgrave etc. Or tin can bay.

I have been out on monos drawing 1.8 and cats that draw around 1.4.

The thought of always having to round the isolated danger "nu2" seems tedious.

I have herd of people getting stuck on middle bank. Not sure if you can cut across that first yellow on 2m of tide safely.

Good to hear with good planning you can get to tin can bay with 2m draught.

Like the idea of a baveria 35 that draws 1.8... Just not sure if I should be trying to find something that draws less water.

You don't always have to go round NU2, only on the bottom of the tide. I draw 1.6 and I have grounded 4 times thinking that if I followed my previous track I would be ok. Now I go north on the last 1/4 of the tide. The rest of the bay is ok if you are sensible, don't cut too many corners. The trip from Urangan to Moan Point for instance. Now is a good time to be here cos any earlier and the midges will kill you close to Fraser at dusk.

Well, l have to asure you, that if one really tries, one can run aground seriously sailing a (boat?) cat which draws .6 m.
I could not believe it either.

Sailing a 2m draught yacht in Hervey Bay and the Straits definitely hones your navigation skills.

Thanks for the replies. I understand you can't cut too many corners but I feel you should have a few more options with 1.5m then 2m. Understand you can get stuck in anything if you take too many risks. I haven't yet but don't want to start either...

My experience so far is sailing a mono that pointed well and managed 2 sail around all the marks across to moon and back without issue. Then I've been on a cat that you can cut across the front of round island or cut the nu2 a bit but with a tacking angle of 100-120 degrees it becomes frustrating trying to sail towards pelican bank in a SE'ly.

Will keep looking at yachts. Don't want to buy a nice big mono with 2m draught to continually feel that 80% of my sailing I would be better off with something a little smaller or shallow draught (1.5 ish)
