Moving to Perth from the UK in October this year and super excited about all the watersports potential of the place, a keen diver/fisherman/windsurfer/surfer! I used to do a fair bit of small dingy sailing at school (while ago!) on Mirrors/lasers/etc and have always wanted to get into larger vessel sailing. Any recommendations on how might go about this? Not so keen on doing a course if avoidable, rather prefer to crew if someone needs the help etc and learn slowly that way? Think will be based in north Perth (Wanneroo) at first but happy to travel a bit if required.

Find a yacht club that sails the sorta boats you're looking at, find out when they sail. call someone from there either a sailing officer class representative etc then show up have a look around and a chat. there are plenty of people who are happy to show a new person the works :)

If you're based in Wanneroo, then your closest option will be Hillary's Yacht Club.

no probs there are plenty of guys out there who own boats and are always needing crew so if you let them know your interested you can probably be on a boat very soon!

Hi There, try a search on http://www.wa.yachting.org.au/db/clubsearch.asp and you'll surely find a club with yachts that suit your liking. As suggested by others, phone any of the sailing administrators from the yacht clubs [get contacts via the link above] and ask them to provide you with owner / skipper details of keel boats looking for crew. Failing that, visit any yacht club bar around midday on a Saturday [Nov to Apr] and ask any of the flag officers [men in white] if they can help you find a yacht to sail on. You should expect to be overwhelmed with offers so choose carefully and wisely.
