Hi Guys,
If any of you troll lures while sailing passages. I was wondering what sort of line you use on your handline? i was looking at 200lb mono. What are your experiences?
Cheers
Jake

That's the way you do it, money for nothing and your fish for free.

2metres of large shock cord, 10metres of 3mm cord, 5 metres of 180-200lb mono. 2metres of 100lb mono to a chrome Smiths jig. Use appropriate swivels to join it.

Pair of fishermans gloves and use the swivels for grip in the final stages.

A recent problem ,on a run up Qld. coast , has been losing the catch. I tend to leave the catch , mostly Spanish Mackerel , too long in the water, due to inattention. Anyhow , on retrieving the line with a fish on , last two times , have had the catch , lure and half the stainless trace ,taken by a large fish.

There is a story concerning Ciguatera poisoning, and naming Platypus Bay , Frazer Island. Anyone , have good info. on this ?

I caught most of my fish on the same trace all the way up the East coast however when I left cooktown on route to lizard island I started loosing fish and traces ! I could see them striking the lure and most where around 1 meter! It wasn't till I returned I asked the helpfull lad at the cooktown tackle shop which he informed me that I need a 2 meter wire trace!

Mate if you catch something big, and theres every possibilty that you will then even very heavy fishing line will make a mess of your hands and make it very hard to land your catch.
Cord, wire trace, rubber shock if you like, gloves and the spoon of your choice is way to go.
Expect floating debris, weed and other crap to take your spoon occasionally so take a few with you.
Cheers, Rick.

Very likely, there has been apparently an increase of Ciguatera further south than normal, the story below says to reject fish over 10kg for human consunption.

Regarding Ciguatera - that is a good story , Loose Change. My attitude over the years is to use Mackerel as small as possible .Most , lately are in the <10kg size. Another tip i've followed for years is to eat one serve only , then wait a few days before eating more of the same fish.

One problem is that the poison is cumulative in the body and can become dangerous over numerous fish consumed.

Anyhow , i've found Hervey Bay to be one of the better catch areas on the coast. Will have to follow my own advice , me thinks !!
