Hi All,
recently had my 50th, my wife is a few years younger and we have a 5 year old. We have always been active doing cycling and other outdoors type things. A couple of months ago we did a discover sailing course, a four hour intro to dingy sailing. We both had fun and are thinking of doing some more training and maybe buy a boat one day.
I am am not sure what type of training To do next, some clubs offer fixed keel training and some dingy training. Interested to get some opinions on what we should sign up for. are some sailing clubs better for learning or suited to our age group?
Thanks,
I would check the sailing club closest to you for racers looking for crew. You will not have any trouble finding a spot.
Try and stick to the division 2 and 3 boats where you are closer to the action, you will learn more in a shorter period.
There are always boats of every level looking for crew at Royal Freshwater Bay yacht Club, Keane St Peppy Grove. Give Barry Martin a call on 9384 9100. On Saturday he sits at a table just inside the gates collecting walk-in crew & matching them with boats.
The key things most skippers are looking for is reliability & enthusiasm. Its a team sport, you need to be there & you must want to go sailing.
All the best! ![]()

My 50th recently too and I bought a small yacht. Trailer sailer. I have had trouble getting my kids interested in the dinghies a few years back.
I found that you learn a lot quicker doing the courses because they rotate the crew constantly meaning you get trained in all crew positions.
I did South of Perth Yacht club keel boat courses. They also don't use engines so its sail in and out of the marina! All adults. Recommend it!
About $300 for each course.
I can't tell you how cool it is to have a trailer sailer for inshore its the best!
