Seen this beauty on Gummers, any ideas as a good first boat as a coastal livaboard?
Anyone owned one or can tell me what to look out for and avoid buying a lemon?
Seems like aut fits the bill given all the research I've been doing, I don't mind doing a bit of internal hands on repairs but would shy away having to grind/cut out osmosis from the hull.http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hope-island/sail-boats/30ft-choey-lee/1116859708
Yes I noticed that in pic, is that a problem?
I would think at some stage it would need changing along with standard and running altogether at the same time. So there's 10-15 k
With out a closer inspection it seems untidy , unship shape and un cared for!
Also being at hope island and on gumtrees would trigger some alam bells.
The bare hull and deck in good condition would be valued at approx 10k for a 30 footer.
Mast , rigging, main engine, through hull fittings and electronics would be vauled around 20k+ my bet is that's what will need replacing.
i could be wrong she could be a awesome bargain with just a need of a good going over.
My previous 1985 37 foot yacht had wood masts which de-laminated and where cut up and put in the bin.
I paid 22k basicly for the hull and deck. After spending over 80k I had a good reliable seaworthy yacht. The surveyor costed my hull at 22k in the insurance breakdown costs. At all up total insured value was $110k
its not really fair to judge a yacht by the photos but for me it seems unreal a good 30 footer would be up for sale for 10k.....if it's good why not get 20k for it?
Go go and check it out go through ever inch ...... Start the donk does it start first ping? Blow smoke? Are the seeacocks all in good working order? Check the bilges? What can you smell? Look at the sails and rigging. Go for a motor round the harbor, check chain plates and deck fittings for signs of water stains, check the rego papers and hin numbers.
the boat has been floating , sailing and used for 43 years same age as me......what Maintance/replacements have been done ?
hope this helps

True, ten minutes cleaning would make a lot of boats look much more appealing to buyers.
These days when you are looking at a boat . Id be more of a mind to look for other than a first boat because of the cost involved that's what I did
One boat and that's it . More so now as its a buyers market. Mine will never be for sale while I'm alive and I dont think my kids will sell either
