I came across this man's nephew.... what an inspiring story.
My favourite bit of advice from Sir Chay Blythe.
"The advice I give to others is the same advice I’ve been following myself all these years: seize the opportunity of a lifetime in the lifetime of the opportunity. In other words, life is too short to spend it sitting in front of a TV set. It’s only a question of attitude and application. Someone might feel they don’t possess enough knowledge to try something adventurous. But knowledge dispels the fear that stops you doing something. The more you do something, the more knowledgeable you become. Why have I lived my life so adventurously? Because, like everyone else on the planet, I’ll have to face my final curtain sooner or later. When that moment arrives and I’m lying in bed looking at my toes, I’ll be asking those toes some hard questions. Have I enjoyed life? Have I taken all my opportunities? Have I done everything I’ve wanted to? Unless all the answers are in the affirmative, I’m going to be really, really pissed off.Faced with two alternatives at any point in my life, I’d like to think I’ve always taken the bolder option. You can call that brave. You can call it what you like. All I know is that it’s made my life far more interesting than it would otherwise have been.""
McN, thats all fine if you are a single person, you can have a bash at anything if you only have yourself to think of.
But if you can do all that with a partner who's willing to do it with you it's more than twice as good as doing it by
yourself. The trick is of course..................

Interesting, this is almost exactly what I said to Polish John, who I do not know very well, as a form of encouragement when all the detractors caused him feelings of guilt and self doubt that he had done something wrong. Thank you Chas Blythe for being a public face of how some of us choose to live our lives.
" Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful man with talent.
Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent"

I first became aware of Jill Knight when reading one of her articles in Cruising Helmsman. Jill has lived aboard Cooee, her 11.3m
gaff cutter, for 20 years. She is guest speaker at this years AGM of the Couta Boat Association and has written a book on my must read list, "Navigating The Edge"
The fact that she owns and maintains a wooden boat is of added interest to me anyway and has lived abourd since the mid 80's.
