Hiya. Anyone know if this chain is any good. It's a lot cheaper than Whitworths. Site says it's made under licence to CMP to Canadian standards and will suit Australian winches. I'm planning on buying a Muir VR1250 down the track.

I'm aware that there has been some Chinese stuff on the market that hasn't been up to scratch. It's 1.49 kg per metre. Whitworths' standard stuff is 1.35 kg per metre. The CMP stuff is 1.47 kg per metre (and apparently has better quality links or something without protrusions at the join in each link. Does this matter?). All classed as Grade L.

Thanks guys,

Rog

It says on the site also .."Certified as Grade L, galvanised short link chain. Printed certificate available on request." .... What is the spec for grade L, is one question I would be finding out about ..... Anyone can print a certificate, that doesn't make the chain any better.

A case in point would be Chinese BS1088 certified marine ply, utter rubbish. "Oh but sir please to be looking, it has the rubber stampings of the BS1088 on it, number one velly good ply"

On the other hand you might be getting a bargain, just do the homework is all I am saying.

If it is cheaper than Whitworths, I would be very wary.

Check these guys out for quality and price. www.stenhouselifting.com.au/

She looks great Dr Rog
Unfortunate for me my masts are anodized and weathered ,I'm still not sure what to do about painting or how to approach it yet.

Check with Bullivants first.

bullivants.com/contact-us

They are the suppliers for most of the chain resellers and are competitive with any of the ship chandlers.

You also want to be concerned about the quality of galvanising.

I got some chain a few years ago, as part of a winch/rode package on special at the boat show, where occasional short sections of chain rusted within 12 months. I had it replace under warranty, and 18 months later the same thing happened again. One final replacement later - with further signs of rust starting - and I sold the boat. Problem solved!
