Our boat club is looking to run some MOB drills, and is in need of a training dummy.
Rather than reinvent the wheel and try and make one, I thought I'd check to see if anyone knew where I could rustle one up?
(tried Marine Safety Vic, Yachting Australia, and a few local clubs but no luck).
Did I remember right Poodes did some training last year?
Only need it for one morning in March.
thanks for any clues...
Why do you want a dummy? What do you expect it will do? If you want to test your recovery system such as the sling method and getting a person back on board, you will need somebody to jump off the back so that you have real person in the water who can catch and place themselves in the sling. If all you are doing is practicing positioning the boat then anything will do whether it be a weighted bouy or an old lifejacket.
thanks for the ideas...
ebay has some strange dolls, not sure if they may suit some of the crowd though.
There are inflatable dolls and also polystyrene ones for store mannequins, minus the makeup and additional features.
SES may be a good place though.
Don't expect the dummy to do much, some of the drills are likely to be with an otherwise unconscious victim, and would prefer something realistic in weight, size and buoyancy. We may end up using a 'volunteer'' for part of it, í'm just charged with the finding props.
At this stage, if a proper one isn't found, I thought of loading an old wetsuit with combo of foam block for torso, and maybe chain or sand sacks in the legs to weigh it down. A few pool noodles, an old lifejacket, voila. Most of the stuff is in the shed if it gets to that point.
