Wondering if anyone has a opinion on a early 80's Marauder 27 as a Tassie boat ( a mate of mine is considering buying one)
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Someone must at least have a opinion on them
One of the reasons I am asking is that before I bought my Sailmaster I asked about a few boats around this length and one of them was a Hutton 28
The comment was made at the time that the Hutton was a light displacement boat for its length and that a heavier boat might be more suitable for southern Tasmania conditions
When I read stuff about the Marauder on the net there are lots of comments about how light it is and I wonder if this might be a issue

I have not sailed on the M27, however I did a round of the bay on a Marauder 24 and it was pretty stiff and sailed well. I haven't seen or heard of a Marauder 27 although the 24s are pretty common. This might explain the relative few comments.
Unless the deal on the Marauder 27 was outstanding, I would have thought there are a few better known alternatives to chose from. Not sure on the Tassie market, might be a smaller market there?
Personally If I was cruising in Tassie I would be sticking with the solid end of town like a compass 28, anything by Peter Joubert, Cole etc.

I believe the boat is in NSW and is less tha $10,000 so the price isn't a issue in this case
The Tassie boats for sale are generally a fair bit more expensive than mainland boats and sailing it over doesn't seem to be a issue to him

Graham, your enthusiasm has taken charge of you. It would cost 5 times as much to fix it up to what it might be worth. You would be lucky to get $4-5000 for it in reasonable nick.
It is invariably better to buy a boat somebody else has spent the money on. I like ebay but it seems to be riddled with rubbish that should be given a dignified burial at sea or overpriced Buy it now listings.

If I was to buy it, it would be as a daysailer/ racer for Jervis Bay. Would not care how much it would sell for! I always watch what Jonathon sells on eBay. Has some interesting stuff at times. Just don't have much spare time, flat out with projects. Got to spend all that money before I peg out!
This may sound a little biased, but I looked at a couple of Marauders back n 2009, one with Jonathon and it was really woefully kept as a mooring minder. Had that been the only issue, it may have been mine today, but there were other things that didn't sit well.
There was very little space in the Vberth, and I couldn't actually get out easily once I'd gotten in. The headroom was low, and the layout was cramped for a 27.
For $10k, have a look at the Top Hat 25. Fully encased keel, proven global travelers with full headroom and a fairly good turn of speed, and can be sailed easily single handed even across the strait during reasonable weather. Google them and see where they've been.
If you have a little more money, then the Compass 28 is certainly the go, as is the Currawong.
