I'm sailing in a 54 ft sloop from Mooloolaba in about 1 month. Would like some helpful comments/suggestions from experienced sailors.

Get out into the EAC and enjoy the ride.
What type of boat and do you need crew?

If it is blowing SE/cyclonic up QLD you might think about doing Morton Bay - Southport Seaway. Depending on your draught there are a couple of shallow spots, but in all it's a nice alternate especially if you work the tides.

The best bet is to carry a copy of Lucas's NSW Cruising Guide, which will help you out of trouble anywhere from Southport South. It will definitely be invaluable for crossing any of the North Coast bars etc.

Then, Don't hurry. I highly recommend you have a look at Yamba (Iluka Boat Harbour), Coffs Harbour, Camden Haven, Port Stephens.....,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

great sail. as mentioned get out 30 odd nm out. in a nor easter itll stay fairly flat in a good blow, but if its on the nose it can get steep n short. once around byron a sou easter is close to on the beam, and at 54 ft you wont be able to just duck in anywhere so pick a good window.
well thats my 2 bob.
