Looking at moving the boat up to Sydney harbour and considering what locations to apply for on the waiting lists. The location has to satisfy these things;
- preferably on the south side between Iron Cove and Rose Bay. I live in Marrickville.
- be reasonably close to a club where you can occasionally tie up to the jetty for power and water and storage of dinghy
- reasonably sheltered
- club has some parking

Just getting a mooring anywhere in Queensland is a major achievement.
First thing you're going to have to look at is the RMS Priority Waiting List. And here is a link to that site.

It's a matter of when you can get a mooring not so much where. Some locations have waiting list times of years.
A mate just last year finally got his mooring in Rose Bay, 11 years after applying.
I realise it might take 3-5 years but I was just after suggested locations that satisfy that criteria.

Have you considered Broken Bay, Pittwater or Lake Macquarie or even down Ramona's way at Jervis Bay??
Botany Bay and Port Hacking are closer alternatives also.
Little Sirius Cove is a good spot with a waiting list that is reasonable. Join the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and store your dinghy at the club or use one of the club's. Easy row even for me and I rarely use the outboard. Ferry stop is right next door to the club and parking is usually no problem. Car access even from the south side of the harbour (I live in the south west) is a breeze along the M5/harbour tunnel. Sit and enjoy the city view from your mooring or sail off straight out into the Harbour. Very protected and attractive little spot.
some of those places you mention have had people on the waiting list for 20 years.
the only place youll get on quick is the inner harbour. im pretty sure you can get on abbotsford straight away - no wait.
i fond its good to go to maritime in glebe there. you can get stuff done pretty fast and suss it out. you can see all this online too, how fasts the lists are moving etc. Im top of the list woodford bay. which is really only about 5 min drive from my place at mcmahons point.easy parking and places to leave a dinghy. Not sure if the same kinda options are available in the east. felix bay might have a short list. i wanted to be the south side too, but youll be waiting a while.
Unless you live close to where you are mooring your boat, you don't want to be spending half your water life motoring up and down the River getting to and from the Harbour. Oh why motor you say. The winds up the river are too light and fickle in my experience.
There are some good spots with good access/free parking in Middle Harbour if you don't mind being a slave to the spit bridge openings.
The journey is the destination though...having said that, this is why im sailing my boat down from the pittwater. love it up there, but i wanna get on quick...i dont feel woodford bay is far at all for me and there is no one on the list.Select to expand quoteHaveFun said..

I wouldn't put a mooring in Jervis Bay. I could fix you up with a mooring here in Greenwell Point though sometime today.

I just moved to Double Bay. Was in Five Dock Bay North for 18 months. I waited on DB wait list for only about 15 months. I believe the Maritime Officer has got rid of a bunch of mooring minders. Also, not everyone on the list is ready to go; some estimate only one in three or four are ready, which means you get yours quicker than you'd think.
I'm loving Double Bay. I'm just off Red Leaf Pool (renamed Murray Rose now). Pool has showers and toilets as well as a cafe. Dinghy storage on beach is okay. There is a DB Marina but I've not checked it yet ; I might today as I need fuel and water. Marina has a tender service but that's all I know. Otherwise Rushcutters is the next bay and has facilities inc. two yacht clubs, one swish and one grunge.
Five Dock was a wonderful mooring as it is protected from all sides. Can be like a mill pond except for the power boats using the boat ramp. These can be numerous and they use it night and day on weekends. Lots of all day parking close to dinghy storage at beach.
Double Pay (as it's called) parking is more difficult. All day parking on south side of New South Head Road if you can get it. Also up Victoria. But the schools make it a little tricky. Having said that I've been able to get parking most times on NSHR which means a little walk down through the gardens. Heavier gear can be dropped at the end of St Mervyns Ave 5 metres from sand if needed. End of Beach Rd is also an option to drop stuff with a few all day parking spots. Be warned, guy who owns the house on the cul de sac IS a sack; grumpy bastard. Limited dinghy storage here also. Dinghy storage also available through council near the wharf but wait list for this is unknown - probably forever. Parking around wharf end of DB is all 2 hour as far as I can see.
Wharf can be used to pick up passengers but you're dealing with pylons.
As Have Fun said, it's awesome being in the main harbour. Got tired of motoring up the river. Was okay for a while but being able to sail from the get go is the **.
Wait lists for Rushcutters is long due to clubs.
I too was in Five Dock Bay Dr Rog and got tired of the journey. Hence the move up to Sirius Cove a few years back and it has been terrific. It might be a different proposition for those who live close to one of the river bays. I know someone who recently bought a waterfront property in the Port Hacking area. Why would you moor anywhere but 50 metres from your boatshed? For me my mooring has to substitute for a waterfront property.
I see only 1 waiting at Five Dock Bay North with 108 moorings, and none at all on the waiting list at Drummoyne West with 28 moorings, so you should be able to pick up a mooring at either of these locations without too much of a wait.
You may want to research dinghy storing. After 30 years of keeping my dinghy in a park in Birchgrove Leichardt council has suddenly discovered a new line of extortion and are charging me $130 a year. If you don't pay they take your dinghy. I understand some councils charge more than this.
Re Drummoyne West: that is basically under the Gladesville Bridge and just north of it. be warned that the current flows through there at a good clip and that you will experience pretty severe wake waves from the ferries and power boaters who are coming out of a no wake zone under the bridge and coming up to plane. Horrible, horrible place to be. Dinghy storage is poor and access isn't the easiest, being off a rock shelf. All agree it's the worst place in our magnificent harbor.
Drummoyne is a different story but longer wait there. 1 on list of 108 - you'll be there very soon. Jump on it now, I reckon. Then do a recky of the other bays in your preferred area and apply ASAP. My 2 cents. The $450 application fee for the wait list comes off your mooring fees when your number comes up.

We have been eyeing off the moorings just off the Drummoyne Sailing club but I'm not sure I will be able to keep our dinghy there and the waiting list for a mooring is long. Also as people have pointed out you still have to travel up the river.
I would be happy with double pay but have to convince the better half that the traffic will not be too bad.
Been negotiating a Hood 20 with use of the mooring, the price is right (not quite free like the last one), moorings in Glades Bay. Don't know anything about this area, any thoughts would be appreciated.
drummoyne - harbour bridge isnt far at all.
woodford bay have no one on the list. ive been on it less than 2 weeks and its looking like im getting one asap - like in a month maybe sooner.
theres dinghy spotsand its a quiet bay with heaps of free parking. easy from marrickville.
i used to launch hobie cat at rose bay. everything is a pain in the arse. parking, dickhead locals etc.
