I've only spent New Years Eve on my boat twice, and the experiences where like chalk and cheese. The first was 2009 on Sydney Harbour, where the fireworks were of course spectacular, but as skipper I found it crowded and stressful. This time we welcomed the new year at American River on Kangaroo Island, which was tranquil and relaxing, and where the fishing is considerably better ![]()
We also explored a couple of new anchorages for the first time.

Had a look around Wirrina last Sunday. Nice marina. Could not believe how cheap the houses were!
Wirrina is by far and away the best staging point for trips from the mainland to Kangaroo Island. Unfortunately the resort has struggled financially for decades, but may have finally turned a corner. At least most of the marina berths have now been sold. That said, there are 20 berths permanently set aside for visiting yachties.
SA has the cheapest rental Marina berths in Australia I believe.
Wirrina is around $50 per week for a 12mtr berth and metro Adelaide and country Marinas are around $60 a week. Cheap living aboard if you can find suitable work!
