Wondering if anyone has tried these http://www.cassellmarine.com.au/p/337429/sailing-shorts---newport---burke.html and what do you think of them to ward off a numb and sore bumb while sitting in one position on long races
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Regards Don
I don't think there is any avoiding the "Numb Bum" unless you have decent cockpit cushions and even then you can still get it.
I think those shorts are more about a bit of thermal insulation for your freckle to reduce the incidence of piles (anal heamarroids ) and having shorts that don't wear out so quick.
Even so they are probably worth having.![]()
I have tried a few different padded shorts including these ones. They tend to be fine while sitting but are fairly stiff when moving around, to the point that these ones rubbes the skin off the back of my knees!
I now use Musto Evo sailing shorts with the option of Zhik Deckbeater shorts underneath depending on what I'm sailing. Neither of these are the cheapest option but the Musto shorts will outlast everything else you buy by years!!!http://www.musto.com.au/marine/evolution/evolution-technical-shorts

Most Burke gear is cheapish in quality, and generally doesn't perform or last very well. The Musto gear is very good quality but as Cisco pointed out, ultimately there is no avoiding the numb bum syndrome. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
Thanks for the feedback
I went to Whitworths to buy the shorts but came away with these instead www.ronstan.com.au/marine5/error.asp?admin=&fail=yes because i decided i they might be a bit more suited to southern Tassie
Regards Don
Yeah well I noted you were in Tassie and thought about mentioning long pants.
For colder climes I think along the lines of warm woollen clothes with water proof outer clothing like a bib and braces pair of pants. That is thinking along the lines of extended cruising rather than 5 or 6 hour racing though.
Wet suit shorts from the op shop. Sew the arms off an old wet suit up the back of the legs and bum with homeward bounders. Wear a pair of beach shorts from the op shop with a set of braces over the top.
