I for one, will miss the 200 metre high stack which was demolished today @ 11.18am.
GPS navigation aside, the most prominent land feature on our coastline around the Illawarra was the stack.
Forget about the two lighthouses here on Flagstaff Hill, the stack was always the 'thing' you could rely on, in reasonable visibility.
Whether it be the regular 42nm run from Sydney or Jervis Bay or even coming back in from an offshore trip, it was something we grew up with and a handy mark for the 'fishos' to use as well.
Apparently the delays in blowing it this morning were attributed to a couple of locals that somehow didn't realise or were not accounted for within the immediate exclusion zone. Also there were some Pelicans that had to be 'shooed' away as well!

It's certainly going to change the skyline, didn't matter from where you were coming it was always one of the first things you would see.

It was always handy when racing on Lake Illawarra on fresh NE's as a reference point for the top mark. As old age took its toll I could never see the top mark from the start line.

Yes, sorry to see the stack go.

Many a time in my old racing days out of Port Hacking, the Flinders Island Races were looked forward to on the calendar.

Crews inevitably looked for the stack to ensure we were on track. No fancy GPS in those days!!
