For the past few days the Port of Melbourne's law enforcement vessel has been searching the shipping channel. I'm wondering if someone from a passing ship has dropped something overboard? They have done this pattern from the Fort to the Hovell and just around the turning basin to the North off Mt Martha Point, then back opposite Mud Is as this pic shows. As it's another of their vessels that checks the depth to see if dredging is required, I think there may be some other explanation for this grid search. It would be interesting to find out what they are on about.

Maybe there a floating container full of whisky or some one dumped some thing over board. Perhaps a Tasmanian Mermaid has escaped from the Huon

Yes well.......I thought Benito Bonito's treasure may have been buried in a cave on the beach near Balnarring and when I lived there I did a bit of digging around!!
I really appreciate the time and effort forum members are putting into this issue!
The thought did cross my mind that maybe a deck hand had dropped a pair of $300 sunglasses overboard like I did just before hauling my boat out, now that the sun is making the odd appearance. After a cold dive around my mooring I now have them back, but with the way the tide flows in the channel they could end up searching west to the Napean Bank or north to the Yarra! As I type, the lonsdale is on her way south down the main shipping channel at a rate of 19.7 knots.........We'll see I suppose........

I can confirm that last Wed when I was in that area the Lonsdale seemed to be wandering around the channel - often travelling on the wrong side by the way.
I believe I saw it doing the same thing about a week earlier.
