Anyone looking for a 40 foot project yacht? This Dunc 40 has been untouched and for sale for the past 6 years.....shes up for a good lick of paint and a few minor repairs....I think I could get them down to the 50k bracket! Let me know if you would like me to arrange a inspection for you. :)
Teak Deck - probably cost 50K just to fix that. (I used to have a teak deck) Fixed it with an air operate chisel and put down some ply which I glassed over. My dreams of having a boat with a Teak deck met reality.
At 50k it will be for sale for another 6 years. 10k is closer to the mark. I can see over 100k on the outside and not even looking at the inside, motor or electronics. Just on the outside, deck, rig, sails, paint, canvass, most likely boat pox, all ropes and at the end of it you will still have a boat that is worth bugger all. All up I can see 200k. There are plenty of good second hand boats on the market with all the fruit for a lot less than that.
I am in full agreement with C and J on this one and would rather call it a financial suicide. Picture your wife's face looking at it first time?
One should not tuch it with a sixty foot barge pole. It reminds me of my two years quest looking for a yacht to buy. I have seen the mooring minders between Adelaide and Sunshine Coast and what a disappointment it was!
This yacht is in that category. Worth - if lucky -it's hull?
Just think about the waste of money and resources keeping it tied up. And there are tens of thousands like this around. Some people got much more money than sense...
I agree it's overpriced. About 30 grand would be my guess as a sale price. It has good bones and would not cost much to get up to speed, just lots of labour. That cabin top and teak deck just need a clean down with "Metal Gleam" or a patio cleaner. The topsides have some minor blemishes but not that expensive to get a serviceable finish. She would come up nice as a family cruiser.
if no one has been bothered to tie the boat to the dock properly ,to stop the gellcoat being torn back to the glass .
then one can only imagine what the engine and other systems are like . not run or oil changed for 6 - 10 years ?
when boats are let go likes this, its a real shame , because to find someone willing to spend the time and money is almost impossible .

Agree. $100s of thousands in this one. Engine would be maybe $25-30,000. Sails $15,000, Rig $10-15000, anchors and rode, winches, stanchions, lifelines, electrics, plumbing and instrumentation. Plus hundreds of hours of labour on the other stuff.
And then you have an amateur job done by the owner on the top sides, interior joinery, upholstery and deck. You might get $50-60,000 for it once it was done in 10years time when you are heartily sick of it.
Buy a boat ready to sail or almost so and go sailing.

I agree Don. I could not find where it's advertised but saw several others that the owners are asking a heap of money for. Still think it has good bones and even if it needs a full rebuild on the engine it can all be done by a pensioner with time on their hands economically. The teak decks look good, just dirty but you will always have the concern that they will not last long if not cared for and an expensive job down the way. I would use it as it is then when worn sand down an lay up epoxy and glass and paint. The topsides scarring is only a minor problem.
What about a link to the ad southace? Way too big for me but there will be a buyer out there, there always is.
My last yacht a Dunc 37 I purchased for 22k with no mast , just a viewing of exterior hull , and no water!
Over a five year period and a extensive rebuild it cost me just over 120k.
Im now at a stage to just enjoy sailing , the odd jobs and preventive maintance.
