Am looking for places we can put our Contessa 25 alongside
Need to go up the mast to fit wiring for the mast head and there is a bit too much Ferry wash on our mooring in Betts Bay. Any advice please?
Woolwich has a public wharf,
There is one near the Dawn Fraser Bath below Fitzroy Ave. Balmain and one at Callan park if you fit under Iron Cove Bridge. This last one is the most sheltered one.
lf all else fails, Five Dock Bay is usually good, anchor or pick up an unused mooring.
One should be careful going up at wharfs, if there is any wash from a stinky, the hull is going to be bashed against the wharf. When this happens while one is up the mast, bad things might happen. l am doing it on my mooring early mornings or late afternoons despite the possible pendulum effect keeping one eye on the water at all times.
Good luck!
Thanks SirGallivant. We were also wondering about Birkenhead. We went down to the marina last week and it was very quiet. I think the wharf is a bit further on from there but dont know if its any good.
Few years back those chaps were not very supportive of casual guests.
If one starts working on ones boat up the mast, at any marina, they would freak out thinking of their insurance.
I usually go to MHYC but l know the people there and they let me fool around.
A Contessa will fit under Iron Cove Bridge, although you may have to watch the tide. Iron Cove to the west of the sailing club is very, very quiet unless it's a club racing day and even then it's just the rescue RIBs that will be making waves. I don't know if you'll have enough depth to get onto the pontoon at all states of the tide, but if you're going up the mast you don't have to.
The other choice is Tarban Creek, which does get very occasional powerboat traffic. It's quiet enough that I've actually stepped my mast there, and watched someone else try to step the mast on a Marauder 24 alongside one of the rowing club pontoons. They got it up, but it didn't stay up.
