Hi all,
I'm planning to head from Mooloolaba to Cairns over December this year, and was wondering what the opinion is on weather conditions?
Specifically, will it take twice as long waiting for the runs of northerlies every week or so?
Have heard on the grape vine that the northerlies are speed killers over Oct-Nov, but what's the prevailing over December??? Would love to go next march but unfortunately limited by a job waiting for me...
Any help or advice is much appreciated!!!
Good luck and fair wind to all =)
Leave now you will get there in no time dam trade winds!
Last year we got very little north most SE to E or no wind at all.
I'm heading far north in march next year
it seems winter seems to be creeping up the coast too far for my liking!
Search this site.
The area you discuss is 1700kms north/south. Totally different weather / wind zones.
Ideal is summer in Bris/sunny coast, then winter in Port Douglas. Done.
Hi Leesails. The time you choose to go north is the time most people choose to sail south. The constant southeast trades that blow from about Gladstone to Cape york ease in November-December and allow a few Northerlies to blow in. The Northerlies are usualy light and engines get a workout more than sails.
There have been seasons recently where the Northerlies didnt turn up and bashing south was the only option. This would suit you if youre sailing north.
Keep an eye on early Cyclones and be aware of boltholes to tuck into if one should appear
Smell the roses along the way, There are many.![]()
