Hi all
My recently purchased Sailmaster 845 currently named "Addiction" was originally called "Aqua-Fae"
I am slipping it in a couple of weeks and i prefer the original name to the the current one so i think i will rename it back to the original name
Some say it is bad luck to rename a boat but surely going back to the original name should not upset the Sea Gods
Regards Don
I have owned a lot of boats and renamed them all. Part of the deal with my present yacht was that I had to rename it, owner kept the name for his new one. I did attend a renaming ceremony on a large steel yacht a few months ago where the owner went through a convoluted procedure he had obviously downloaded from somewhere. There was free alcohol.
Don I agree with Ramona, it should be done with the correct protocol and of couse the free alcohol. Only other requirement is that you let us all know where and when.
Sorry you did not mention that you guys were available for renaming ceremonies! I would have sent a round of invites!
I kind of renamed (name was not painted on) my Farr 740. We had a nice ceremony involving lot of beer and nibbles, the original name was, I have been told FarrBetter and I renamed it FarrMented, I had to decline a few names proposed that I believe were of bade taste (FarrKit.... etc....)![]()
missus downloaded a thing that was three pages long for the de-naming...then another three pages for the new naming. (god farkin help me)
anyway....im way too scared to not do it...so it has to be done. bit of fun anyway. bloody long winded but. gotta love it though. we are all ancient mariners at heart. the thought of drifting up to a tropical island after surviving a shipwreck is where all of our heads are really. screw work!!..screw people!!!...screw the rat race!!! let the long winded naming ceremonies begin!! Neptune...hear me roar!!!

Sounds a bit like the one I attended. There was lots of chanting and pouring of champers over the side. We were all a bit toey by the end, at least 2 bottles went over the side. We had a glass in our hands but the waste seems excessive. Might pay to write your own, use your own imaginary friends and economise on wasted alcohol.
The bad luck associated with renaming of boats goes back to the Viking days.
The Vikings would build their boats on the beach using slave labour and logs gathered from the hills behind the beach.
When the boat was built they had run out of logs but needed something as rollers to run the boat into the water. They still had plenty of slaves so they used them instead. The champagne we splash on the bow of a boat when we launch it is symbolic of the slaves blood.
When a boat was pulled out of the water, refurbished and was to be renamed, they used the slaves as rollers again.
It was certainly bad luck for the slaves.![]()

Exactly which gods need to be appeased and ceremony to be used I couldn't say but if the sacrifice of a good measure of alcohol keeps the bad luck away, I am all for it.![]()
The new boat is full of suprises
We live in Port Huon which is south of Hobart in Tassie and we bought her from a lady in Hobart who's husband passed away a couple of years ago
On the compression post in the cabin under the mast there was a small plaque saying Aqua-Fae winner of the points series PDYC 1984/1985
I guessed that PDYC stood for Port Dalrymple Yacht Club in the north of Tassie so i sent the club a email asking if anyone remembered her
I received a answer from a gentleman who said he was the second owner and had bought her when she was near new (she was built in 1983) from the original owner who lived in Port Huon and in the late eighties he sold her to the family we bought her off
We have been emailing and he has given me a lot of information on her and her past history and is posting some photo's down to me
I am amazed that after 30 years she has come back in her home port so i think that it is fitting to return to her original name
Regards Don
Get a bottle of champagne, not sparkling wine, pour some over the bow, say, "I rename this boat Aqua-Fae and may the gods bless this boat and all who sail in her", pour some of the champagne into the sea for the gods, drink with friends, drink anything else at hand, and all will be well. Trust me. It works.
